    I think the article is pretty accurate. People tend to react. Unlike a lion or tiger, a serval won't try to kill someone but anything large and exotic, people get scared, call the police, and shoot the thing. Last year there was a young buck trapped in a apartment complex area in Oakland CA. It was clear from the video that the deer was very young as he had small prong alters coming up but the police just shot him anyway.
