A bit worried

Missing Neka, Loving Sabriel, Nakaia, & Trance
I'm worried about Sabriel. I live in Sioux Falls, SD - which over the past few days has been having some issues with the weather. My power had been knocked out on tuesday the 9th, and I got it back on the evening of the 12th. It is now about 1am on the 13th. Because my power dropped to the mid-50's I had Sabriel kenneled at the vet from wednesday evening to friday evening, over 48 hours - while I stayed with my mom. The wednesday night she ate fairly well at the vet, but then thursday night she didn't and now that she's home she isn't. I know she's stressed from being in another area and I'll be watching her to make sure she eats. I tossed the food I brought to the vet and they gave me back, thinking maybe she didn't like the taste if it got a bit stale or something. Just put a new scoop in her food bowl a bit ago, and she didn't go to it to eat. Tomorrow if she's still not eating I'll try canned cat food, if after that she's still not eating I'll be making a trip to the vet to see what may be wrong. Even before she went to the vet she wasn't eating a few nibbles at the bottom of her food bowl for a few days, which isn't like her - usually she eats all of her food. She is still eating her treats like they're the best things ever.

She eat's Wilderness Blue Buffalo Chicken flavored dry food. Before she always seemed to like it. I hope I'm just over-reacting and she's a bit stressed. Wondering if it's because the last time I cleaned her cat bowl, but by now she shouldn't be able to smell anything. Or maybe because I quit giving her the "calming" petnatural fun shaped chews, but I think I quit those after I noticed she quit eating all of her food entirely...

Right now I'm just going back to the fact that the reason why I knew that Neka was sick was because she lost her appetite, so I'll be much happier with Sabriel starts eating again. She's using the litter box, she's active and playful... Maybe I'm stressing over nothing and she's just stressing because of being gone for a few days. ...Just need her to be okay!

Tonight I also had a good play time with her, she was pretty active, she certainly didn't seem to be missing any meals / seem tired from not getting enough protein. --- I also noticed her toy mouse, which I left at the vet with her, which usually smelt like catnip - now has a completely different smell to it - and she doesn't like the new smell either. My assumption is it's a cleaner/disinfectant type smell that they would use to clean at the vets office. Wonder if that's putting her off her food for a bit..

Tink was at the vet's overnight this last week. She would not eat any breakfast at the vet's. They thought it was because of all of the smells, sounds, just too much going on. She did eat canned Fancy Feast Elegant Medleys when she got home. Yours might be freaked out by noises, smells, away from home etc. Sue

Yeah I am thinking part of it could be stress. Overnight she did eat a little bit but not much, don't know if she's full or not though - because I don't know if she ate any of the previous food I gave her. Today I'm going to get some canned food that I think she'll enjoy (she's enjoyed it in the past).

I'm also getting a new food bowl for her because the bottom started out as a non porous surface and due to her food or something has become a slightly porous surface - maybe she doesn't like any smells that may be lingering.

She's still enjoying her cat treats very much, so I know she has some type of appetite, and she hasn't vomited or even looked nauseous. She's still playing and running.

Even if I do get this food thing sorted out though I'm taking her back to the vet on tuesday (I made an appointment this morning.) because she's got this right ear thing going on. It's like it itches or something and sometimes she will scratch at it, I've looked in there and it looks clean so I'm not inclined to think it's ear mites. Since she has sometimes gotten her ears wet playing in the faucet and what not I'm wondering if it could be an ear infection or something. It hasn't seemed to affect her balance or anything - but maybe it's affecting her eating habits. I don't know. I'm trying really hard not to be paranoid and think the worst, so for now I'm taking this one day at a time until she's her normal self again.

I'm sure Sabriel will be fine Brandy...but I understand why you are so worried...try to relax a bit more though...animals feel our stress and anxiety and sometimes react accordingly...

Brandy, I think you're right and the stress of being in a new place has unsettled Sabriel, so just keep up her normal routine before she had to stay at the vet and see if her appetite doesn't come back. I'm betting the canned food will do the trick to get her to eat.

Well during the day when I was gone she ate more of the dry food but she still didn't eat all of it and it was only 1/4th a cup of food. Tonight I gave her a new food bowl, and I gave her a can of blue buffalo wet chicken food. She licked some of it and I saw her licking her lips after wards but she'd rather go play. So I'm not sure if maybe she ate some of the dry food recently to where she's full, or if she'd rather play, or if she's just sick of chicken. Because with the two different types of treats I've given her she's scarfed them down. Hopefully by morning she's eaten all of her wet food...

Our boys appetites change from day to day. If we offer chicken, beef, pork or fish, they eat less prepared food. I don't know anything about your vet, but I will tell you ours gives our boys treats constantly if they need to be there for a whole day or a night. The log from Mickey's most recent overnight included four different people feeding him between 1 oz and 2 oz of boiled chicken at a time!

If your kitty isn't hungry after coming home from the vet, check and see what she ate while she was there. Our boys are a big hit at the vet, even when they don't feel well, and our Mickey who we thought had an upset stomach ate 6oz of chicken in 12 hours, and 3 tbsp of yogurt.

Our boys eat blue buffalo dry food along with innova wet food, and unseasoned table scraps of meat (chicken, beef and pork), but you might want to email Kathrin and Martin if you are having a problem- they helped me enormously when Mickey was sick.

At my vet they don't give extra stuff, we bring our own food for them to disperse. I don't give her meat. I give her Wilderness Blue Buffalo Chicken dry food, the adult kind (even though she's a kitten - but Kathrin and Martin were feeding her adult dry food to at 3 months). Then for treats she gets the treats you would buy for pets, hers tastes like catnip.

Last night I bought 3 of the blue buffalo chicken wet food - and the one I gave her she hardly touched. She's still energetic and playful this morning. I think I'm going to go and buy some fancy feast wet food with gravy, as that stuff is hard to resist for a cat. I'm bringing her to the vet tuesday morning, where I'll figure out the ear thing, and I think to be on the safe side I'm going to ask for her to be x-rayed - so then I can stop thinking pleural effusion. I think that's more for my benefit than for her's, but the only other time I've dealt with a cat that changed it's eat habits is from when Neka was sick. Now when Sabriel purrs I'm like is that a normal purr or is that a I can't catch my breath purr, because sometimes it seems really heavy. I'm so projecting right now and the thing is I realize it - I just don't know how to stop it, I'm hoping if I have her x-rayed I'll be like "whew" okay nothing major wrong and just keep trying different cat foods for her. I'm hoping she'll like the fancy feast gravy kind for tonight at least, just to get her to eat more..
