Margay in NYC

Chris Elliott

Savannah Super Cat
The Merrill's kept Monte the Margay in a NYC apartment in the '60s and '70s and were featured in a couple of Life Magazine articles. In '61 Meg Merrill said she couldn't live without him. By '71 she comments rather frankly on the difficulties of owning a Margay in NYC.

I think all of us can appreciate the desire to have such a wild creature, and owning a Savannah gives us the look and a taste without all the issues. Not to say Savannahs aren't challenging at times.

Here's some of the beautiful photos and a short article:

Beautiful photos! I like how her attitude changed over time regarding the difficulties of owning one. It reminds me of the YouTube "Zeus the Serval". In the beginning, she just oozed enthusiasm about how adorable her seval is. Now at 2-1/2 years old, she still adores her serval but has added the disclaimer of "Servals DO NOT MAKE GOOD PETS. They Require much more attention devotion responsibility time and money than any domestic pet." She has also recently acquired a Savannah kitten.

Maybe her mistake was thinking she was getting a Labrador? Her quote: Owning one has been a dreadful mistake.
They're untamable, untrainable and completely self centered.

Has she owned any cat before this?
