Mounting issues

I have a 3.5 year old f5 SBT Thor that was neutered when he was still a kitten but is having some mounting problems. He is regularly mounting one of our other male domestic short hair cats Loki of the same age but much smaller. It's usually at night as they both sleep at the foot of the bed though there will be times during the day where Thor will find Loki and mount him biting his neck. He has left marks and recently my wife found a dime sized scab on Loki's neck. We have a third cat but he is a little bigger than Thor (fat tabby). Thor never tries to mount him which I'm guessing is a size thing and he doesn't sleep in the bed. It didn't start until about 6 months after both Thor and Loki were neutered. Is this going to pass or is there steps I can take? We try to keep Thor as active as possible in hopes to keep his kind off mounting but he plays on his schedule not ours lol. He is also incredibly picky when it comes to toys. We have yet to find the one toy that he goes crazy for every time. But that's a whole different post.

Mounting other cats is a dominance ploy, and very common in cats of both genders, including spayed and neutered pets.

I assume both boys are healthy....occasionally cats show dominance over another when there may be a health issue going on with the one being picked on. Is it possible there is a stray cat coming around outside your home...possibly an intact female that is in heat?

Are Loki and Thor of about equal energy level now that they are adults? Since Thor is a typical Savannah in the energy department, you could consider adding another high-energy level kitty to your crew, and this need not be a Savannah.

How does Loki react when Thor mounts him...and how do you react? You may have to separate them when you are not at home to monitor their activity, especially since Thor is leaving marks on poor Loki...

Have you tried Da Bird wand toy to help expel excess energy for Thor ? His grandmother Tart also is very picky about toys, but she cannot resist Da Bird!

Hi Pam! It's been a while! Both boys are very healthy. Thor being slightly over weight which we are working on. They all had kitty colds about 4 months ago and besides that(which they are all better from) they are as fit as can be.

Loki lives up to his name. He runs circles around our other 2 cats when it comes to energy. He is non stop. Usually when Thor mounts Loki makes the terrible crying sounds which alerts us to whats going on. Usually it starts with a deep grow but turns into crying quickly. We separate them as fast as possible. We have never noticed the tufts of fur or scaring on Loki's neck when we are gone. Thor seems to do it almost exclusively while we are there. Can't be 100% sure, it just seems that way.

There is a random cat that will come by. A black cat that looks almost identical to Loki. No idea if its a male or female or if its been fixed or not. It comes by maybe once every 3 months or so. Walks by and wanders off. Never sticks around or anything.

I bough Thor da bird a while back. He loved it for about 15mins then moved on. He did LOVE to watch it though. Same with laser pointers. He sits there as low as he can go and chirps away, rarely attacking. That was about a year ago and Loki has already destroyed it so I just ordered another one for him. I'm on a deployment right now over seas so I'll have my wife report in on how he likes it.

So far actually his favorite toy had been that raccoon tail we got from the show when he was a kitten. Someone recommended a place(can't find it for the life of me) online that sells larger ones as well as lamb fur plush toy with catnip inside but he never really took to it the same.

Oh I forgot. One of the best ways I get him to really engage his inner hunter is a game I made up for him. He LOOOOVES turkey, duck and chicken hearts. It's the only raw food he will really touch. So when he is asleep or in another room I take his treat and hide it in some random easy to get to spot like his cat tree or window sill. He figures out real quick there is the smell of treat in the air and hunts it down.

Hi to you all, too! :) I hope your deployment is soon over!

It's good to hear both boys are healthy. That surprises me Thor is overweight with his energy level ;)

If Thor is mounting Loki mainly when you are home, he may be showing a bit of jealousy over perceived favoritism he might think you are showing Loki...just like kids will do.

It's entirely possible the black cat outside is setting Thor off...you may not always know when the stray is outside, but cats sure do. Usually they react in a more aggressive manner called Redirected Aggression..attacking their indoor buddies because they cannot get at a stray kitty they can see or hear or smell....it doesn't sound as if that is what Thor is doing, though.

Yes, the raccoon tail is a hit here as well, and still going strong about 5 years later. Thor's grandma Tart also loves the natural kind of toys.....Hyendry toys makes similar toys:

Unfortunately I have another 6 months or so. Such is life. Thor really is a lazy cat lol. He gets crazy bursts of energy but would much rather cuddle in our laps or watch the birds outside. Every summer we try the out door thing but we live near a busy road and just when he gets comfortable lounging in the grass crotch rocket will go by startling him. That and he has out grown his harness. He really is about as big as his father was if I remember correctly.

Thats the place! We got him the black sheep skin cat toy which he is probably the most consistent toy he likes. Those and my wifes hair ties and My blousing straps. These http://www.amazon.com/Elastic-Blous...&qid=1434923650&sr=8-1&keywords=blouse+straps

We find them constantly in his water or food bowl. It's got to the point where I had to stop using them at work because he ruined them all

What a stinker! Be careful with the elastic hair ties and your blousing straps...I know many cats are obsessed with them...the elastic smell, I think...and can choke on them.

I am sure he grew into a good sized boy! Both of his parents are also on the lazier side with random bursts of activity, lol. Any chance you could post some new pics of him? :)

If you can put up some sort of enclosure that is escape proof for outside...Thor and the other boys would most likely enjoy that. Darn motorcycles, anyway....

Heres[URL] an instagram album with some new ones of him

is some forced bath time. Don't let the picture fool you. Loki does not enjoy this one bit! He tolerates it for a minute or two but is quick to leave

Do you think he will grow out of the mounting? Is this something I should go to the vet about? I'd like to have a calm(lol) household before we decide to bring in a new member to the family...a dog that is. Not a baby...nooo sir.

Great pics :) They all look pretty spoiled and happy!

I'm not sure this is something he'll grow out of. You might try using Feliway spray or plug-ins in the rooms they occupy the most. http://www.feliway.com/us

A vet visit might result in your vet recommending Thor be put on Prozac....I don't think he needs it at this point but something to consider if the mounting behavior continues or escalates in intensity.

Too funny on wanting a calm house before adding another 4-legged member and not a two-legged one with no fur ;)

We have used that before about 2 years or so ago when it first started happening with no luck. Will give it another shot! The vet will be a last resort

There is a new feliway specifically for Multi Pet Households. If you try it again I would try that one. Petco had it in store but not online.
