Are Savannah’s happiest being the only pet ?

Are F1 or f2 Savannah’s happier being the only pet in a house or do they want to share the attention with other Savannah’s ? When I see servals in Africa, they usually are alone. Is solo there nature ? Or are they sometimes pack animals ?

Servals in the wild are different than savannah cats...remember savannahs are domestic cats, whether they are F1's or F6's. As rob said, it depends on the cat, but I have found they like having a friend.

Even a domesticated Serval is different from a Savannah so I don't think you can make direct comparisons. Where a wild Serval lives, it likely is hard for multiple Servals to hunt enough prey to sustain a group (as they don't bring down large game but hunt rodents etc) thus they would more likely be solitary for a very practical reason.

I have two F1s in my household of five (until recently six) cats. Neither would be good as an only cat. But I have had one F1 (out of the four I have owned) that needed to be an only cat... still I've had later generation Savannahs that were the same. I think it is more an individual personality thing.

What I DO think is different about early generation Savannahs is that they are a LOT of kitty for another cat to deal with, hence you can find bringing in an F1 or F2 into a home with sedate older cats that really just want to sleep in a patch of sun leads to trouble. Often owners do NOT consider how this will turn out. Early gen Savannahs do NOT leave another cat alone if it tells them to, it takes "no" as "try harder" and a cat running away is an invitation to chase and tackle, so you can quickly have a negative situation evolve. That isn't the early gen SV wanting to be an only pet...but some interpret it that way.

I think like any other domestic cat breed, individual Savannahs will have individual personalities, so whereas some will love having kitty companionship, others may see any other kitty as an intrusion into their territory. I think you really need to assess each cat individually. Having said that, in spite of the fact that cats are not pack animals, I have found that most do get along well with other cats.

As others mentioned, it depends on the cat. My F1 DESPERATELY wanted to be friends with the two older DSH cats in the house, but they pretty much hated him. My F3 is the same way. She wants to play, to cuddle, and they just hiss, spit and growl at her (and so we are getting her her very own SV kitten soon, lol).
