calming aids

Its a generic and sort of a loaded question but if you give a scared or nervous kitten a calming agent, such a calming chew or Bachs rescue mission, something along that line, and when they take it and it works and then they allow petting and touch, does that mean the cat is afraid and the calming agent helps them have less anxiety and fear ? And if they still dont allow touch and the product is working is it then the personality shall we say of the cat?

I would assume that if it works, the cat just needed something to take the edge off. There's no way to prove that it is working if the behavior still continues. The only proof is if the behavior disappears. If it doesn't work, it doesn't mean it's the fault of the cat's personality. It could be something caused by a medical issue. Cats can show symptoms of maladies similar to what affects humans -- bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorder. In any of those cases something stronger than an over-the-counter remedy may be required.

As Deborah said, there are so many potential causes for behavioral issues if you want to fix the issue the best way is to get to the bottom of the cause. If it is just a poorly, or difficult to socialize cat and the calming agent works then I would continue to use it and see if you can't eventually win him/her over. BTW, I have eventually won over several poorly socialized/hostile cats over the years and have never used calming agents... but some will just never change... :-(
