Some of the "packing peanuts" are safe. Take one and dab some water on it. If it dissolves, it is grain based.
(Which makes for a fun antic with your coworkers. I had a fun time letting the technicians think I was totally over the hill when I would unpack a shipment. With a newbie around I would say "Oh boy! A snack!!" Grab the salt shaker, dash the packing peanut, and eat it right in front of them. Barrel of laughs!)
