Fleas

It's been about 12 years since my Mom lost her cat from the flea shampoo incident so I am unsure of the product name.

As for the essential peppermint oils used in the toy, they were Orbee balls from Planet Dog, a pretty reputable US company and when I contacted them I was told it was a human grade essential oil. There are others who have had similar issues, Patti had kittens drinking mouthwash I believe, and just because you dilute poison enough that it doesn't instantly kill your pet doesn't make it any less poison.

I have also been dealing with fleas, even though my 6 month kitten has been treated monthly with Revolution for the past 3 month and Advantage the 2 months before that. He had his last treatment 2 weeks ago and the last 3 days I have found fleas hopping around. Yuck! This is a reasonably safe area and he is an indoor outdoor cat which I suppose is part of the problem. And his favorite spot to bed down in the grass and bushes is 2 feet away from the spot that the deer use for the same purpose. My last cat had fleas only once, that was about 15 years ago, and 1 treatment of a topical flea treatment and the problem was permanently solved. Same house and he was also outside a lot . Anyways, one thing I have been doing to hopefully reduce the problem is regularly putting everything he sleeps on in the freezer. Which is easier for some things than washing. Supposedly that kills eggs, larva and adult fleas. If you live in a pet friendly building and other pets have fleas, I would guess the problem could be difficult to solve as they probably travel between apartments, same as bed bugs do.
