Goopy Left Eye After Rabies?

Hello Everyone!

Looking for some wisdom, here is my question.
Boujié is turning 6mo and it is time to schedule his neuter. Before he can be fixed he had to have a check up and get his rabies vaccine. I requested a 3yr rabies but the (and all others) I check with said he must have one year first and the next year can get the 3yr. He was vaccinated on his hind right leg/quarter. He did very well at the vets. He was a little sleepy upon arrival home but no other symptoms. This was on the 26th, about 3-4 days later we noticed a lot of buildup in his left eye. It's a goopy eye booger and continues to come back after we can it with a warm wash rag and also overnight.
I called the vet to ask if this was a side effect and they claim it is not however I find it odd that the day of his visit there was no issue with anything whatsoever and now I seem to be observing an eye infection of sorts.
He will get going in on Thursday to be neutered and the vet said if the eye is not too bad (which I do not believe it is currently) they will be able to send him home with something to treat it. I am baffled as to where this came from and wondering if my other cats can catch it? Anyone had a similar experience and could share some wisdom or hypothesis on this matter? It would be greatly appreciated and thank you all. It appears to be the worst in the AM attached is photo of his eye this morning.

It's possible he picked up a little bug when he was at the vet? And I think you mean his right eye? That's the one I see irritated. If the discharge isn't yellow or green and he's acting normally otherwise I wouldn't worry about it too much. You can also get some Lysine to help boost his immune system. Doesn't need to be anything specific, you can get human grade Lysine at the drugstore.

The rabies shot may have lowered his infection resistance and he picked something up at the vet...or...he could have had something looming and the vaccine, lowered his immunity, which turned into an eye issue...there are many reasons cats have runny eyes from a cold to herpes to conjunctivitis to other things...I agree with Heather on Lysine, so perhaps just play it by ear and speak with your vet :)

Either Boujié had an existing infection that was lying dormant until his body was stressed by the vet visit and vaccine at which time it flared up, or he picked something up at the vet during his visit there. Since incubation periods for most URIs are longer than 3-4 days I would guess the former. The good news is, if it is goopy drainage it is most likely bacterial and therefore treatable (clear drainage is more likely a viral infection for which there is no treatment).

Most infections (bacterial and viral) are contagious, but if it is something he came with then the other cats have already been exposed and probably built an immunity to.

Thank you all for the information and I believe you are correct. I have lysine for my sphynx and have started him on it. All the info is greatly appreciated!

Hello all,

Thank you for the info, he must have picked up something at the vets, used some antibiotic ointment on his eye and he is all recovered. :)
Back to his old crazy man self!
PS. Boxes make the best toys! Lol
