How much food?

Zeus

Savannah Kitten
I have a male F2 Savannah that is 12 weeks old and 4.6 pounds. My question is as he seems to be pretty big for his age just how much wet food should he be consuming each day aside from the dry food I leave out. (Which he does not seem to care for to much yet)

I fed 1/2 can in the morning, (small can), then refrigerated the leftovers after 20 minutes of leaving it out. In the afternoon, I'd put that back out with another 1/4 of the can. Plus dry food out during the day (auto feeder). Overall, he ate about 3/4 of a can until he was 4+ months. Then it was a whole can, plus chicken chunks in water, plus dry food, plus treats.

Rule of thumb for the first year, put out more food than he eats. Let him walk away from it.

Or (another guesstimate) 100 calories/pound.

Congrats on your new kitten!!

Any kittens regardless of size or generation should be fed as much as they can consume. I feed raw and have had some only eat about 5 oz a day, to one that ate over a pound a day (and that was an F7). Raw is more filling than canned so they could eat even more of canned food. I'd give him as much as he'll eat, broken up into 3 or 4 meals a day. And FYI, that is probably about an average weight for an F2 male at that age.

I agree, kittens should be allowed to eat as much as they want, unless you start running into a weight problem. Every kitten is different, so let him tell you how much he needs.

Congrats on your new fur baby! Would love to see some pics.

My F2 Shango weighed 4.3 lbs at 12 weeks old. He would eat an entire 5.5 oz can a day, spread out between 3 or 4 meals. I had always left out dry, but he never touched it and to this day will not eat any kind of kibble I've offered him.

He's now about 28 weeks old and weighed 10.11 lbs a few days ago. I think he's going through another growth spurt since he's always hungry so he gets fed 4-5 times a day. He currently eats two 5.5 oz cans a day plus 1/4 to 1/2 lb of raw rabbit. He also gets 1 treat before bed... only kind he likes is dehydrated raw rabbit, quail, turkey liver, chicken hearts & duck hearts. All the others I got from PetSmart & Wal-Mart ended up going to my sister's tabby cat who LOVED them all lol!

A good estimate I went by is how much the can said to feed, then double that amount for a kitten. Your kitten is the best way to tell how much to feed them. They tend to have a way of letting you know if they are hungry... Shango would get ornery and start nipping/biting at me. If I gave him too much, he'd leave it on his plate.
