Ok guys Shane and I will be heading to Lequoia Savannahs next saturday (7/12) to meet and bring home our f4 boy! I've read a lot of threads on here for first time SV owners but I want as much advice as possible. We will be driving roughly 11 hours there we will stay the night then drive roughly 11 hours home. So any advice on traveling with a SV that just met us would be greatly appreciated. What do we take with us for him? How often do we stop for potty breaks? Will he go potty just anywhere or do we need a sort of portable litter box? Keep him in the crate or let him roam the car? Can we get a harness before we meet him or do we need to wait so it fits better? I need help guys!! :)

Opinons vary on this but I wouldn't let him loose in the car where he'll have no protection in the event of an accident and where his roaming may actually cause one. So if you don't have a large crate, buy one big enough to hold a small litter box and a cat bed and let him travel in that. Take a sheet or large towel to cover the crate in case he panics or cries too much.

Ask Christina if he's harness trained. If he isn't, don't bother taking one because it would be too risky to use it on him if your intent is to let him stretch his legs outside the car when you take potty breaks. Let him stretch out in the car when you are stopped and be sure to put him back in the crate before either of you gets out of the car.

Remember, he's a bit older and will be taken from the place and person he loves, and put into a car with strangers. This is not the time to try anything new with him other than getting him home as quickly and safely as possible.

Thanks WW! I figured we would need a crate that we could put all that into. I did not even think of the sheet/towel but that will be a huge help I'm sure! I can't wait to get him home. We already have a room designated for our kitties and he will be in the other bedroom for his quarantine time. I also took Monday off work so that I can be home all day and spend time with him. How much time should I spend in his room at a time?

As much as you want. LOL. Just don't push interacting with him until he's ready. You know the drill -- take in your laptop or reading material and just "be". Engage him in play and let him set the limits.

Looking forward to the pictures. And to hearing of your time with Christina and the cats.
Just relax though Samantha. He will love you. I sense a strong love in you, even though I have not met you. Since he will be with you and sense the same love even more so, he will be drawn to it. You and Shane need to be you and Shane and he will latch on and be your fur buddy.
