Questions on diet

We received a Savanah cat bc he's owner past away. He was on a raw diet before his owner died and the person that took him put him on Reg cat food. He refuses a high protein kibble but was all for raw chicken and liver. We are taking him to the vet tomorrow.
My question is what should we have him on? We are lost

Raw is best ( with supplements ) ...High quality wet ( grain free ) is next. Check the ingredients Make sure MEAT is FIRST. There are many threads here that talk about food.

Cary is correct in the preferred options for feeding. Don't be surprised if your vet opposes a raw diet. Many vets are not educated about feline nutrition.

You can feed homemade raw or whole prey or feed canned and supplement with a variety of meats and organs. What you ultimately decide to do depends on your budget and time.

If you choose to feed raw, it's VERY important that you read about various diets to ensure the proper ratio of dark meat, organ meat and bone. Here are some excellent sources to get you started:

There is also a group on Facebook that provides a wealth of info Prey Model Raw Fed Cats. If you decide on raw or whole prey, come on back here and we can give you a list of sources for meat, organs, and prey.

I would keep him on whatever food the foster family put him on after his owner passed away. If you want to transition him onto something healthier it needs to be done slowly (e.g., over a matter of weeks) after he has settled in and adapted to his new home and bonded with you. Raw would be ideal, but if you don't have the recipe the owner was using it can be a bit intimidating to delve into unless you're really committed...
