Raw Advice

You're doing great with the food. Trial and error is about the best way to figure it out.

The pictures are great. Shango is a very good looking boy. He will be a fine man cat....soon. Too soon... ;)

Thanks :) ...my sister's tabby cat loves the error part lol, he eats anything and loves getting the things Shango turns down, especially the raw & bags of treats.

Love the pic up high!

If you remember that the serval diet consists of birds and rodents it may not be surprising that Shango isn't interested in beef or venison. Trial and error can be expensive and frustrating so I applaud your temerity in finding a formula that works for Shango - kudos to you!

Thanks for the support! :) I think we've found something that works for the both of us... at least for now. NV Limited Ingredient Rabbit wet and Wellness Complete Health Chicken wet food, plus Darwin's raw turkey and Primal raw rabbit. Of course not all at the same time.

Yesterday he decided he no longer likes the Darwin's duck, but I will still keep offering it to him occasionally in case he changes his mind. This will also help keep the food costs down... only eating NV limited ingredient rabbit wasn't cheap (n) ...but of course Shango gets what he wants

I read on one of the threads that you should worm every 3-6 months when feeding a raw diet. Shango currently gets Interceptor every month to prevent heartworm. Since this also protects against some other worms, is worming every 3-6 months still necessary?

I think since it also treats roundworms and hookworms he should be okay, but you should ask your vet to confirm this.

It sounds like the only problem could still be tapeworms. Neither vet is too familiar with a raw diet, although they are not against it either. Since Shango gets Frontline Plus, he shouldn’t be able to get tapeworms from fleas and they think he should be fine with the raw food since the freezing process should kill any tapeworm and said odds are he wouldn’t get tapeworms since they mostly come from eating fleas. Luckily, fleas are not a big problem in our area and Shango is an only fur child. They said they could still worm him if I felt it was necessary or purchase a pill, like Droncit Feline, that is meant to eliminate tapeworm, but personally they did not think it was needed. Since usually tapeworm segments can be seen on the cat’s bum or in the feces, I think I will just stick with the Interceptor & Frontline Plus and only worry about the tapeworms if he shows symptoms of having them.

There are 4 different heartworm preventatives for cats, but none of them protect against all worms. Heartgard plus (oral) protects against heartworm & hookworm. Interceptor (oral) prevents heartworm, hookworm, roundworm & whipworm. Advantage Multi (topical) prevents heartworm, hookworm, roundworm, fleas & flea eggs. Revolution (topical) prevents heartworm, hookworm, roundworm, fleas & flea eggs.
