As far as I know it is a sporting term, used in cricket but I think also in baseball... so as Pam says it refers to a length of time. In sports it is the time taken for that team to face the bowler/pitcher before getting all "out" or three out depending on which sport is being played. So it can be used as a term for your lifetime or length of your career.

Sorry, I forget about terminology not being understood sometimes. But yes, it refers to a length of time and comes from cricket (as correctly pointed out).
