Strange New Urination Habit

Hello fellow Savannah Cat Chatters...

I have a 3 year old s5 boy named Zephyr who just recently started a new bathroom habit...

Not too long ago we introduced him to a new buddy that he didn't take too well to... they were together for a good 8 months or longer and I had some bathroom issues with him (peeing outside of the box etc.) During that time I turned an old storage box into their new bathroom. The walls of the box were way too high from him to pee outside of. That seemed to solve the problem. In the beginning of the introduction stage, he was very stressed and seemed to only tolerate his new friend. After time passed they would play together and sometimes during the night even cuddle up to one another, so everything seemed to be getting better. During the course of that introduction he came down with what seemed like some type of bladder infection... he couldn't stop urinating, and there were even traces of blood in his urine. We rushed him to the vet and he was put on medicine for about a week. He got better right away and the two of them continued to grow together.

In a recent relationship split, I kept Zephyr. Since the separation he is doing worlds better. His old personality has come back and he seems to be so much happier. His eating habits have improved, his mood, friendliness, and just about every aspect of his old personality has found him again. He was truly meant to be a one man show!

He is still doing strange things he never used to do when it comes to the bathroom though. He starts his urination squatting down like normal and mid urination he lifts his butt up and twitches his tail very rapidly, peeing all over the sides of his box. Has he gotten lazy in his older age? Use to "marking his territory," within his litter box (they used to share) or is this something lingering from his bladder infection where he could be in some kind of pain?

I have trained him to sit down on command, and so when I see him start to do this, I ask him to sit down like I normally would, and he looks like he is thinking about doing it, but the twitching of his tail and the raising up of his butt still continues. Maybe I should work on his with the clicker again when it comes to bathroom etiquette?

Does anyone have any ideas or seen this behavior before? Thanks so much!

As long as you're sure he doesn't have another bladder infection or other malady, I'd assume it's marking behavior. He's had a lot of changes what with getting used to a new cat and then having the cat go away. If your former partner lived with you and is now gone, that is another major upheaval in Zephyr's life. I'd give him time. The behavior may or may not resolve but he's going in the box which is better than the alternative.

@WitchyWoman Thanks so much! I need to set up another appointment with my vet just to be sure. Those were my thoughts as well. Even though his personality seems 100% better than what it was with the other cat around, he has been in the same place and around my ex for a significant amount of time, so it's all new to him now. He is doing great with the transition apart from this one thing. I'm sure he will improve even more as time goes on. Thanks again!

It sounds like he is spraying, marking his territory. I assume he is neutered? Did you move to a new place, or did your ex? If you are in a new place he may feel driven to claim it as his own. I think clicker training is an excellent mode of training/retraining a cat so would definitely try that. You can also consider trying a Feliway or other pheromone diffuser for awhile to see if that helps settle him.

The behavior you described is exactly what Jake (Bengal) does. He has done it for years - no health issues whatsoever and he doesn't spray (thankfully though at times when he is happy to see me he'd appear as if he was spraying and of course I checked but nothing) but his urine tends to get out of the box. I don't know if it has to do with his birth defects. I bought a jumbo litter box with cover and cut the top off but the sides are tall enough so his urine doesn't get out of the box except for one side (entry / exit). I put puppy pad that area and replace it every other day or so. I tried to get him to stop doing that but to no avail so I decided to let it go. He was neutered at young age - probably around 5-6 months old. As long as he uses the box and is a good boy though he can be mischievous at times I'm happy.

He needs a second litter box to see if there is different behavior than with the first one and in a different spot.

Don't complicate the simple, start there.
