Ok I literally gave my best friend's new kitten a belly rub today and she loved it. She stretched out wide and purred like a diesel engine when I did it. Soooo... this can't be a hard and fast rule right? Now I didn't go straight to her belly. I scratched her head, ears, neck, throat and back for ages and then she rolled over, stretched out and demanded her belly be rubbed. So if they feel safe and affectionate with you they must love this sometimes otherwise why would they offer it up for a tummy scratch?

My Kilifi will roll onto her back and expose her tummy, but if you try to scratch it, she grabs your hand and tries to bite. ( NOT Hard ) SO sometimes they may be teasing you, or just telling you," I trust you , but please don't rub my belly. I'm ticklish. "
Sounds like your friends kitten likes belly rubs and does trust you.

Rafiki loves having her belly rubbed. She will roll over on her back and do the "I want" movement with her paws. Jammu flat out demands belly rubs. He has a spot by the front door and will not allow passage further into the house until his belly rub needs are met.

My outside cats just love their bellies rubbed.....they will just lay down flat on their backs when I pet them to let me know!!
