The claws

Anyone have any advice on the claws? He has gotten so gentle, but I swear they are different. I clipped them on Tuesday and they are deadly on Thursday. Is he a mutant, lmao. Deadly points two days. I've tried the soft paws, they were ripped off within 24 hours.

He continues to get better all the time, but I am still pretty beat up from playing with him. Declaw is not an option.

He's learned to be better but I am still getting nailed when he gets excited

Are you getting nailed because you are using your hands as toys -- wrestling etc or because he jumps at toys you are holding? When I exercise my boys, I use big, long toys and feather wands. I can flip the long stuffed toys around so they jump and latch onto the middle or bottom of the toy leaving me intact and non-bloody. Well, except for Atticus whose jump reach is impossible to compensate for. Scratches from time to time are unavoidable but using larger/longer toys to protect yourself helps. I buy toys made for dogs -- bigger and thicker.

How old is he, because up to about 6 months of age, their claws even immediately after clipping are needles, just blunt needles from taking the tips off. The claws are still thin because they are smaller, as they grow their claws increase in diameter and clipping them has more of an effect... just a thought.

Are you clipping then back enough? Its kinda tricky at first but if you clip them far enough and round them out with a soft file, they should last longer. I cut jambis once a week. I feel like when the vet clips them, they are really really short. Making climbing a challenge, but saves your hands

Hello All! Thank you for the responses :)

Witchy - I have a toy that I am playing with that has a really fluffy tail he loves. You are right about this, I am using my hand to move it and he is just too fast, just insanely fast and has some hops. He gets me and it instantly bleeds. I don't think he means to, but gets so excited. Is there a site that you are buying these toys from that you can recommend?

Bridgette - Yes, he is still young. He turns a year on 4/1, can't believe he is already 22 pounds. Sometimes it seems like they are almost splitting at the ends, just very slightly, so maybe they will get stronger in time. The kitty claws are like needles sometimes.

Jambi - I so believe I am clipping them far enough, I start young with the kitties so they can tolerate it and not be super mad. I grew up with rabbits so I am very used to clipping claws and getting close, but not hitting the quick.

I trim my raggie's claws and don't have to again for another month. It's been a while since I've had a young cat and this is my first Savannah so I think that has a lot to do with it.

For cat wands, I highly recommend the ones from Hyendry: http://www.hyendry.com/Hyendry_clarion_batons_cat_teaser_wands.html

I have both the OMG & Raptor batons. They are the only wands Shango has not been able to break when playing. Any others I've purchased all eventually end up getting snapped in half. The only downside is when Shango is extra full of energy and wants to play for over an hour straight, my arm does get tired of holding the heavier Raptor wand. I don't have that problem with the OMG wand.
