You'll actually find the majority of dog training nowadays is very positive reinforcement. They've just found its what really sticks. Dogs are eager to please across the board-- even the more stubborn breeds.

Yup, my breeder is insisting on screening whoever I decide to use for training to make sure they use positive reinforcement only.

Having a very stubborn doggy, my beagle, I can't imagine negative methods working for him. He lives to please himself only so positive reinforcements like treats worked great. I think punishments would only have harmed his bond to us...and possibly dampened his happy carefree personality. He's the most obedient beagle most people have met, people in doggy parks with their beagles on leashes are amazed at his recall to me, and that we can trust him offleash...it took time but I am glad we just persisted with him.

But our first year with the beagle was hellish, so I feel for Louie's Dad as that level of persistence really is frustrating.

Yeah I'm not sure making a cat gag and foam at the mouth is a great idea. I get the frustration for sure, but sounds a bit overkill. I'm glad it worked for his sake-- what was your plan b?

Joe...there are motion activated air cans and zzzzt mats that you could try as well as Bitter Apple and Bitter Yuck rather than shoving an irritating substance into Louie. It breaks my heart to read that.

Broke my heart to do it. Next step would be to glue down a hardwood edge strip overlapping the carpet edge against the tile entry floor.

The overwhelming negative response here is not unexpected. I resent your negativity, and have no need to explain myself to any of you. You should put me on your ignore list and get over it. I love Louie more than I love my own sister. I would never do anything to him without careful thought, planning, or intent to harm.

You should read The Life Of Pi if you want to learn how to train an intransigent animal.

Think about how cruel life is for animals in the wild. How unforgiving nature can be, and how one small mistake can be fatal. Think of the hard lessons that animal mothers teach their offspring, and how some of them are life-and-death ordeals. Some of you women are waaayy off base and need to get a life, or get a psychiatrist.

I'm done. Flame-on.

Nope-- since you are acting like a troll-- posting incendiary comments in order to get a response-- you will be treated like one. This thread is effectively locked.

Joe...your comments are not only sexist and inappropriate, but in the case of your reply to Trish, downright obnoxious.

You knew exactly the type of responses you would get, especially since you have been a member for a very long time...and you thought it so wonderful to post how mean you were to Louie...yes, I said MEAN!!!! And not get any backlash? You think if you posted that nonsense somewhere else, you would not have had the same reaction? Think again - the reaction would have been much worse.

Louie may be a bit stubborn, but so are many animals...and so are many people...hmmm...imagine what would happen if we shoved a child's nose in pepper like that, made them gag and foam at the mouth....the child would be removed from the home...no doubt about it.

Louie does not live in the wild...your comparisons just don't fly here. You may love Louie as you you have stated, but your methods of teaching him are by no means humane. What do you think people reading this thread are thinking? You think because others have not posted that they think it is ok? Far from it...I just came on and have messages about animal cruelty...

For once, why don't you just admit what you did was a bit harsh? And maybe you were wrong...you know darn well it was...but you are an intransigent individual, who does not take criticism well....hopefully YOU have learned something from this thread, but I fear not...
