On Saturday, Freya payed a visit to a veterinary hospital to ensure that she never has kittens. The surgery went well with no complications and we were able to take her home that evening. We were told to keep her separate from our other cats to prevent them from licking, biting, or poking her incision, and that hasn't been a problem because the other two cats seem to think that "conehead" is some kind of horrible disease and they don't want to catch it.

We were told to check the incision daily for redness, swelling, oozing, and funny smells. if we see any of that, then we need to take her back to the vet because there could be an infection. They gave us an oral painkiller to give her every 12 hours. She doesn't seem to like taking it, but it definitely helps calm her down. We're supposed to leave the cone on for two whole weeks.

The biggest issue is that we're supposed to keep her calm and not let her run, jump, climb, or essentially any of those things that SVs just LOVE to do. I was counting on her own body not letting her over-exert, and luckily, that seems to be the case. I don't like seeing her in pain, but I am glad that she's not doing anything that could tear her stitches. If she really wanted to run around and act all crazy like normal, I doubt if I could stop her short of keeping her crated, and I don't want to do that.

All in all, I'd say she's doing well. Nothing damaged but her pride.

You can bling out that cone and make the other cats jealous. Some sparkles, faux gems, and her name painted inside and she'll be the blingiest feline in the hood. Might bolster her self-esteem.

Inara was spayed before she left for her new home and I could not keep her quiet past 2 days...but then again, when I spay my females they do not have a hysterectomy - only ovaries are removed, so it is a much quicker and faster healing process.

My vet has moved to doing that too, Paige, plus they never leave external sutures so the cat doesn't have to wear a "cone of shame"... which is good as I cannot imagine succeeding in keeping one on them! LOL!

Willowcricket, when last I had a cat spayed my vet said "keep her quiet" then paused, looked at me and started laughing... yep, he'd forgotten how impossible that is. I think it good to confine them to one room so they aren't tearing around the house, but there's just so much you can do to keep them quiet and not jumping about...

Is just removing the ovaries an option? would love to have a less traumatic situation. My little girl goes in on the 15th of this month.

Yes an ovariectomy is possibly rather than ovariohysterectomy (traditional spay in US), in fact in Europe they usually only take the ovaries and not the uterus...

I suspect once you have completed the pain meds your baby will turn back into her normal crazy self - good luck then! I have never had to use a cone for more than a few days, although a few times when they wanted to bother their incision I put them in a sock to protect it (back is open for pottying).

Patti - I liked that sock thing when you posted it. Then Freya got a little upset stomach and coated the inside of her cone in vomit. After that, I made her a sock thing. Now she's walking like a drunken sailor and the other cats are even MORE determined to NOT do whatever she did to piss off the humans

Thanks for info, did not know I had a choice. Emailed kitty's doctor this morning to see what his opinion is. Would like to see excatly how the sock was cut. How does it keep fom creeping up?

It's chats like this that make me giggle; SO glad I'm getting a boy kitty! Breeder is allowing "breeders rights" but we ALWAYS neuter our pets, his older brother can breed...not Eddie II.
