I've only known a British Shorthair that was a hermaphrodite! I think it is rare in all cats!

So being so unusual, I think Mango's case and recovery will be somewhat unique. He's not really had a normal neuter, nor a normal cryptorchid procedure...it's been more like a complicated spay.

I'm glad you finally got the PCR test done if he's had issues for 3 months...

Yes, I'm hoping the PCR will pin-point what the URI is for sure so it can be treated properly. I didn't realize Mango had to be anesthetized for the PCR, so the doc suggested we wait and do it during his neutering so he wouldn't be put under twice.

The doc did say that Mango's surgery was more involved than a spay and his recovery will most likely be longer and possibly tougher. He is very swollen and bruised, but 4 days post-op, he looks great and is moving around and wanting to move around more, but that could be due to his pain meds. Tonight is his last dose, so we'll see how he does off of them. Of course he is also on another antibiotic to prevent infection to his incision site. Poor guy has been on more meds in 3 months than me in my lifetime

But Mango is a trooper!

I have never had to have a cat anesthetized to sample for a PCR test... but I am glad they have the sample now!

Yes, the amount of digging around would be more than a spay even, so I can imagine recovery will be harder. Cats are amazing how they recover from surgery though!

Well, I heard back about the PCR results and the tissue sample results.

First, the PCR results showed that Mango tested negative for all causes of URI. Doc said that's great news, but makes for helping him more difficult. There could be a blockage in his sinus or elsewhere and we may have to scope him to get to the bottom of the breathing mystery. No wonder meds weren't helping! Crazy.

Second, the tissue sample came back as being ovatestes. So, although Mango looks all boy from the external point of view, his "abnormal" testicles were ovaries and testicles. Wow. Again, I say crazy.

He is looking and doing considerably better in his 9th post-op day. He picked up weight and filled back out, his bruises have almost completely gone away, his incision looks like it's healing well, and his energy level is over the top! His belly is saggy and still a bit swollen looking in some areas, but overall, he is recovering very well.

Wow! Your Mango is quite unique! The first hermaphrodite SV I've known!

Glad you have the PCR test results... it does explain why the meds might not be working although it's frustrating as it is a "non-answer"...you know now what it ISN'T but not what it is :-( I agree that your vet might need to scope to get a better idea of what is going on. They can take cultures while up there too and might be catch something that is treatable...something more obscure than the PCR tells you about. Good luck!

I'm happy to hear that Mango is recovering from the surgery. So sorry that you still haven't cleared up the mystery of his breathing problems. What a unique little fur baby you have. He's a she and she's a he.
