Wow, that is a terrible Union contract...and terrible hours...once upon a time, I was a union organizer for the largest healthcare union in the country...I organized nurses and doctors and got them fantastic contracts...I would never agree to a contract like yours...that being said...my union worked me to death - I was on call 24/7 and had no contract...so after seven years of that nonsense, even though I loved helping and representing people, I just couldn't do it anymore...and now, I am quite disillusioned with most unions...

I have NEVER been a union person. This jop was non union when I hired on. Then when America West Airlines bought US Airways, we AWA Simulator engineers were "absorbed" into the larger Simulator group of US Airways. We had no choice. We were forced into a contract that was negotiated by a bunch of greedy people in Charlotte to whom money was more important than personal time. We lost our holidays, our ability to take vacation unless it did NOT cause overtime, and a friendly working relationship with management. The ONLY thing it gave us was a decent wage. Under AWA, NO ONE was ever forced into having to work overtime. The idiots at Charlotte don't see anything wrong with that. " Well you get paid overtime..." Yes but at what cost. Doing the shift I am doing tonight usually makes me physically ill.I have been awake since 3:30 am this morning, and I have not been able to sleep at all since I got home. so I am expected to be awake for 32 hours straight, and them expected to come home for 8 hours and go back for another 8 hour shift at 10 pm tomorrow night....ON MY WEEKEND!

We would love to. But the Charlotte group has 43 engineers. We have 15. not enuf votes. One of the reasons I am jumping ship.

Pretty amazing the kind of people that are put in a position of power. I see it all the time at the Postal service. If they can't do the job but show that they would screw their own mother for a quarter, that is management material! I thank God that with my job, I work in the office for a couple hours and the rest of the day I spend crusing around the country side.

I agree about most managers. But this situation is not really due to idiot managers. It is the union contract we have. One that we had no say about and were absorbed into when we bought US Airways. It really ties management's hands and is actually the reason that long shifts can be required. And it will only get worse what with out recent acquisition of American Airlines. And again, we, the ones doing the bailing out, will be the ones that get the short end of the stick. The main reason I decided to retire in April. Before it hits the fan.
