Geez, it could be dozens of things.
*He was upset about something;
*Upset tummy;
*Dirty litter box;
*Just an accident;
*He's decided he doesn't like the couch.
Clean the area thoroughly with an excellent enzyme cleaner such as Anti-Icky Poo. If he persists in pooping on the couch, first place to start is a vet visit to ensure he is in perfect health.
From what I have heard over the years, inappropriate eliminate is most often related to a behavioral issue. Have there been any changes in the home such as a new person, new pet, or new daily schedule? Are there cats or other animals roaming free outside that he might be aware of? Have you changed litter, litter boxes, or litter location(s) recently? If you only have once box try putting out two - some cats prefer to pee in one box and poop in another. Also, they like to choose soft absorbent spots to eliminate on such as beds, couches/chairs, laundry boxes so if possible try to supervise him when around these items until you know that there isn't going to be a repeat performance.

We just moved in to a new home and there are lots of wild animals and the neighbors have 2 dogs that like to come on our property and I am sure there was a dog in the home before because I have had to clean over some pee stains will definitely be getting the anti icky poo I figured it would be him trying to mask the dog scent
