Biting !

The squirt bottle isn't helping with much anymore. He stops whatever behavior it is for a minute or so, then come back with stronger intent whether is be biting, getting on the counters, trying to grab things he knows better than (on purpose to get a reaction I'd assume). The finger in the mouth is hard to do most of the time because it's not my hand he goes for, it usually my arm if he's laying next to me on his own, or if he walks over while I'm sitting up on the couch he goes for my leg. He does go for my hand when I'm on the computer typing though. I realized just now I haven't been verbally praising him lately when we play so I'm going to start that back up that way he feels a little better.

Yeah, he still isn't well completely. I need to get another vet visit soon when the vet is back from vacation. That could also be part of his issue.

I think that if leaving the room upsets him , then when he bites your arm like that, try scruffing him and saying "no bite" in a calm but firm voice and putting in a timeout in another room or a crate. He will learn that biting does not get the reaction he wants.

But also avoid those situations, you say when you are walking you can see when it is coming, when he's getting agitated so don't lean in to pet then and maybe redirect with a wand toy. Don't sit with your arm resting on him if he's on your lap...and most definitely don't give him more petting and attention if he does nip you!

And yes, have that vet visit. I do believe that if an animal doesn't feel well then he/she will be touchier and grouchier, just like we would be if we didn't feel right...

George's brother
I am no expert and have little experience with this breed of cat, but many many high drive puppies. I go back on a combination of things. What would a prey driven puppy be doing at this stage in life. And what would a mother cat be teaching her kitten at this life stage in the wild. Seems how I deal with George's behavior is most effective if it mimics his mental age as a baby hunter. At some point mom will bring live prey and give it to the baby to figure out how to kill, he mustn't give up if he wants to eat, eventually the same will hold true for hunting, Don't Be The Prey. A mom cat will put up with less and less hard kitten prey as they get older, scruffing is fine when she has to stay with them, but later she just gets up and leaves. My timeouts and physical response to aggression are linked to age and his level of intent, too hard play is ouch and cease of interaction any truly aggressive behavior where play is not his intent is immediate aggressive response from me of putting him in his room telling him no and shutting door. I give him lots of time, he has bed food water litter box and toys there so it is not so much punishment as a place to gather his thoughts and regain control of himself. Most time when I open the door he is napping in his bed. Always remember to praise good behavior vigorously , when he is going to do something like bite and changes his mind praise praise praise, when you see them contemplating a bad behavior use a warning voice and it it works praise praise praise, Always remember any attention is attention so the more positive it is the less negative they will feel the need to elicit, and take the pressure off youngsters after they have been in trouble so they don't get frustrated .

Keeba will do the same thing at times. It does startled me and I do what Patti/ B have suggested. He usually does it when he want attention. I usually walk away and ignore him for about 30sec. He doesn't do it as much as much as he use to with me, but he tries it with other, naughty boy!!!

I also play with him if I notice this is going to happen, I can usually tell!

Tojo has been biting and playing more rough with me lately and I have blamed it on the fact that our dog and my husband have been gone on a fishing trip for the last two weeks. I have been kinda using the techniques described above but Im not very consistent :(
They both thankfully come home tomorrow so anxious to see if his behavoir changes once he has "hairy legs" to bite again.

I think that animals have an innate sense of change and they do not like it...when Zuri was gone, Taj was extremely needy!!! would not leave my side...but he got used to her being gone and then she came back :eek:And he was not happy about it...

I also think that feel our stress, unhappiness, etc., and sometimes act accordingly...

You're so right Paige! Its funny I was noticing the other day when I was on the phone talking animatingly that he was getting into ALL kinds of trouble! It reminded me of when my son was young and how he acted when I was on the phone too much! Savannahs are so much like raising kids ;)

I know this thread has been quiet for a bit....but figured I would ask....

The only suggestion I haven't tried, yet, for our 'biter', Lotto, is the bitter thing. Lotto tend to bite our arms and ankles, though. Any suggestions for something we could rub on our arms and legs?
