Bloody Diarrhea

Thank you everyone so much for you help! This webstite has provided me with invaluable resources!

I just received an e-mail back from the breeder. She said that his siblings have had a distended belly, but firm stools and negative stool samples. They are going to treat his siblings for parasites (assuming there are low levels that cannot be picked up on a stool sample). Since my little boy's stool sample also came back negative, I am wondering about the PCR Dirrhea Panel test.

Prior to visiting the vet, I had been treating him with probiotics (found out the health food store), that I have given to my other cat with success as recomended by a prior vet. He is already scheduled to go back to the vet on the 22nd for vaccines. He is still a happy little guys, so I am going to keep a close eye on him tonight and may give the boiled chicken and white rice diet a try!

I hope your little guy bounces right back and is as good as gold soon! Do you have any pics to post of him?

Sometimes stress can be the cause of loose stools. I hope the baby's tummy settles down quickly;>)

Is the little one getting any better?

Our baby came from the breeder with bloody diarrhea as well. He was still happy and full of energy, eating and drinking normally, just as you described. It turned out he came to us with tapeworm, even though the breeder *supposedly* (grrrr) had him dewormed when recommended. According to our vet, tapeworm doesn't always show up in the fecal test depending on when the worm sheds it's eggs (we had him tested 2 or 3 times!). We didn't figure out the problem until we found the worm segments in his stool. Maybe another deworming is needed, it might be something to talk to your vet about, and make sure to keep an eye out for squiggly things in his stool.

I hate to burst your bubble, but it sounds as though you do not believe the breeder dewormed the kitten? Tape worm is not taken care of with the norrmal deworming. Drontal is usually given in a single dose to take care of tapeworm. There would be no reason to administer the Drontal if there were no sign of tapeworm(segments in stool). It only takes two to three weeks for the segments to be seen in the stool. Fleas can be a problem in most areas and it would only take one flea....be it from the breeder's home or yours to cause the problem. If you were not seeing signs when you got your kitten.....you have to know the breeder didn't either. The plain, simple truth is a flea can be picked up anywhere....the breeder's home, your home, the vet......... My point is ...since you did not see segment when the kitten arrived,,,,the breeder wouldn't have either.......I think your" supposedly" statement is not fair to the breeder. You said the vet ran three tests....found nothing. In my HO...this would be a pretty good indication that the kitten was dewormed. If your vet didn't see any sign...how would you expect the breeder to? I have no idea who your breeder is, but I do believe in being fair to the breeders and the new owners. Suggesting that they lied about deworming is not fair to them . If your baby is healthy, happy and doing well now, the tape worm would be least of my worries. Stuff happens. The plain truth is...the flea could have come from either place and nobody is to blame. If you are happy with the little one...the breeder must have done something right;>)

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend! I didn't say the fecals came up completely clean, the first one came back with Giardia and coccidia which we had to treat right away. Mace had loose/bloody stool since his first day with us, and was also extremely underweight and bony, both which I feel the breeder should have noticed. We had a couple other personal issues with him as well, not regarding Mace's health, which aren't really necessary to get into. I wasn't trying to attack all breeders, I know there are a lot that are trustworthy and really do care... I'm sorry if I was taken to be too harsh! As far as which dewormers treat what parasites, I really didn't know, I'm admittedly and obviously way less experienced than pretty much everyone else here haha... I only had my vet's opinion to go off of, and given that we have other cats that never go outside who never had any issues, not even so much as a flea (we took them in for a check up too when Mace was having all his problems), our vet was pretty positive that he had the tapeworm since he was at the breeder. Thank you for clarifying that he wouldn't have been treated for tapeworm initially, I really had no idea, (See, that's why I love this forum ) but even so, there were still other issues that made us not trust the breeder so much. You're right though, I still wouldn't give up my baby for anything!

ANYWAY, I'm sorry again to anyone who may have been offended! Kelly, I hope you're baby boy is doing better!

No offense taken by anyway, Tarah, so not to worry. I think Shelby was just clarifying...

LOL...no offense was taken...I was just trying to make you understand that tapeworm was not a parasite treated by standard deworming;>) I am glad to hear the baby is over his problems and doing well now;>) All is well that ends well;>) Shelby

We just found out our 17 year old dog (sorry -OT) had tapeworms! Everyone here gets Revolution punctually, so I never considered tapeworms. He had no symptoms at all. It was for his annual senior work up! Now, how should I proceed? The dog does go in and out and is beloved by the cats. (Read : TARGETED)
