Bonnie Illies - anyone familiar with her?

Well I am a practitioner of western medicine so I believe in it for the most part. However, I also believe in eastern medicine and complimentary or alternative therapies. I agree that Rafiki is on a LOT of medications and should be reassessed to determine exactly what has been helpful and what does not seem to be helping, then get rid of the latter - but would suggest you NOT stop anything without first discussing it with the vet(s) who prescribed it.

I'm curious to know why Bonnie prefers to do a healing off the meds - does she feel that they will interfere with her healing? What exactly is involved in that?

As someone who has been on both prednisone and an appetite stimulant, they can have a positive effect. Combined, she may very well eat too much.
.
The odd thing has been that the prednisone and appetite stimulants did not work , either separately or together. Last night was the first night that she was really hungry. The question in my mind is was it the new meds (Cyclosporine) or did the Denamarin (SAM-e and Milk thistle) finally take effect and settle down her liver. She has only been on Denamarin for a week.

She feels that it interferes with the healing. The liver needs to rest and the meds are placing more stress on the liver.

I think you are answering your own question. As patti suggested, I'd talk to your vet first, but IMHO, it seems like you are starting to find your plan. I know prednisone is a medication people need to wean off of.

I can see how the medications would affect the liver as many pharmaceuticals do. Milk thistle protects the liver.

Before going cold turkey with Rafiki I would strongly recommend going to a more natural vet for advice, or a practitioner who deals with this type of thing. Although energy healing is wonderful, it should not be done without other 'complimentary' therapies.

I know prednisone does a huge number on both the liver and kidneys, and it was the turning point for me with Zeddie, when I really jumped in with two feet into more natural healing

I cannot quit all the meds right now as my internal medicine vet is trying various things and I need Rafiki to be much more stable. She is still extremely fussy with food and is still losing weight. We are meeting with internal medicine vet next week for another ultrasound and blood work. We will be reevaluating her meds at that time.

I would prefer to keep her on Danamarin (SAM-e and milk thistle) for the long term. It is primarily the prednisone that I want her off of. I am tapering her off the appetite pill as it really has not had much of an effect and she is now sick of the pill pockets so I have to do it the difficult way. I am considering going ahead with a healing even with Rafiki on the meds.

Did she say how she 'heals'? Is it Reiki? Or something else? It shouldn't matter if she is on meds or not, the healing can only do good things. It might even help you wean her off the meds.

I have sent Reiki to many a medicated pet

I will throw in my two cents...I, like Patti, believe in an East/West approach. I do not believe you should discontinue all meds...the prednisone, yes...cyproheptadine, yes...the others no...

My cat Rocky was 15 when he died...he was the best cat I ever had and when he died, I was not only devastated, but blamed myself for listening to a holistic vet, who had me take him off his thyroid meds. He was doing well on the meds, I took him off and six months later, he was getting worse, so I took him back to my conventional vet. He was put back on thyroid meds, but did not live much longer...so there is a place for holistic medicine, but also a place for western medicine.

We MUST go with what our hearts say. If it turns out to be the wrong choice, then we will have learned a valuable but not so happy lesson. I feel there is room for both disciplines, both holistic and traditional.
