I could only get Spar to eat meals in a pumpkin sauce. No straight canned pumpkin. His stool was normal smelling, just bad diarrhea for about 24 hrs until meds began to work. He is gaining weight like mad now ( he never lost weight) and CRAZY hyper. The raw diet has helped his stool consistency, even though he isn't 100% raw yet.

My cat SV F7 had Giardia. Same symptoms but the stool was the most awful smell. She has been treated and tested negative. I need to retest her. . Her stools still smell(but not like originally) and are loose. I started her on pumpkin and it does help.
What was she treated with? What kind of test was neg? Fecal float or pcr? What are you feeding her? Even after txt and the Giardia has cleared you can still have diarrhea cause the Giardia strip the lining of the intestinal wall. Have you been giving probiotics? Also too much pumpkin can cause diarrhea too.

Thanks she was on Florentero after the antibiotic.. I'll try to find her vet receipt and get the info.

Not much to add, except excuses for being off savannahcatchat for so long: change of job and work pressure!

We have a cat (sv) at home with similar stools, dripping, and the only way to keep him dry is by keeping him off kibble.

So its the kibble and not a protein issue? He can have a variety of
protein sources with no issues?

Glad to hear that Spartacus is doing better! When we brought our Manx, Shady, home 3 years ago, she began having very loose, smelly stools. Found out that she had Giardia. What a mess that was! :poop: Thank goodness, it didn't take too long to clear up.
How long? I just started 3 of my cats on metro and 1 cat is a savannah. she was not the positive tested cat but treating all cats. The issue is Savanna bit me the second dose. Bleeding. Not nice. This is going to be a tough week........

Giving antibiotics to cats can be quite challenging at times. If it is liquid you can try to make it easier by giving her a treat immediately following the dose. If it is a pill try using a pill pocket or hiding it in a small piece of raw chicken or something else she likes. If you absolutely can't get it down her, ask your vet about using panacur instead - it doesn't taste nearly as bad, and you only need to give it for five days to treat giardia. Don't forget to sterilize the litterboxes with bleach or similar agent.

How is the cat bite? They can be quite serious at times and may require antibiotics. If it is looking red and swollen you should have it looked at by a health care provider.

If your treating Giardia, metronidazole is not very affective. It is good for treating secondary bacterial infections, but is not affective for Giardia. Panacur (fendabendazole) is a good txt for Giardia. It only has to be given once a day for 5 days, sometimes a second round is given 7-10 days after the first is given. If you are seeing diarrhea, it might not clear up right away. The lining of the intestines are shed so usually diahhrea will still be seen after Giardia is cleared up.
