What other laws should we get rid of that protect animals?

How much goverment do you need ??? cats are born with claws, if you can't deal with a pet with claws get a fish, but not a catfish ! you would have to de fin it, we just voted out 8 years of politically correct, cats here live like cats, outside with claws and they love it, vote cat's with claws !

Exactly !!!!! I can´t believe that there´s actually a discussion about this. I´m sorry, but nothing pi#ß+*# me off more then people mutilating animals for what they think will make a animal look better (cropping the ears or tail) or make it safer (declawing)
It´s a cat and......they have claws period.
Cats are not stupid ....they can be taught what to do when they see you coming with the clippers. You just have to take the time when they´re little. When Baghira sees me coming with the clippers he lays down on his side and puts his paw out and spreads his toes......lol I know not all cats will do that, but if you never take the time to teach them you´ll never know.
To say that it would be easier to adopt a declawed cat blows my mind. How many of those cats come back because they stop using the litter box ??? Why....because the paws are so sensitive that you now need a different litter because the type you were using hurts there paws.

There are people I respect who have said that the information on declawing is divisive and they absolutely know better. There are others who abhor the idea of causing harm to a cat or kitten in this fashion yet believe that any laws, regulation or governance would be far worse than the harm placed on these animals. Then there are the purveyors of this cruelty, motivated by profit and under the guise of the AVMA and their lobbyists will suggest that they are self policing on the subject.

Needless to say, I am vehemently opposed to declawing cats and kittens and welcome legislation anywhere that attempts to put an end to it.

I just think that what people do to animals sometimes is just wrong. I look at things this way......if what your thinking about doing to some animal the same as doing the same thing to a person.

I live in the LA area. The first ban on declawing came from West Hollywood in 2003. It was the first ban in the nation. It was challenged by CMVA and overturned in 2005 but reinstated in 2007. This was followed in 2009 by a declaw ban in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Burbank, Santa Monica, Berkeley, Beverly Hills and Culver City. It is still very easy for folks in these areas to drive just a few short miles to find vets that are not held to this law. I would say that the best law passed was the one in 2012 that prohibited landlords in the state of California from requiring tenants to declaw or devocalize their animals.

I am in the UK and thankfully the barbaric, cruel, disgusting, mutilating that is known as de-clawing is ILLEGAL here. I do not understand ANYONE who could argue positively for this.

Maverick has claws....I clip them to take off the needle ends and that is enough. he claws his way up his cat tree (and as he is a kitten and still learning, occasionally us humans....ouch!) but that is what a cat does.

P***es me off that de-clawing hasn't been made illegal everywhere.

What next?.....cutting their vocal chords so they can't "annoy" us with their chatting????

No one is arguing positively for this...but banning it in the US only forces people to go to another state...I live in NJ and it is 5 minutes to NY.

I HATE declawing and do not allow it per my contract on my kittens. That being said...bans do nothing...NJ has much more to worry about than a ban on declawing cats...I think education is what is key as Rafiki stated. Perhaps if more vets educated people also, that would be a much better option.

Yep, CMVA the keeper of the keys to education on declawing in California. The struggle to get this passed isn't going to end with a single locality or state, and the AMVA will fight it every step of the way. No different than the NTSA arguing against seatbelts in school buses since the 70s so they can squash one more 7 year old in a seat and pocket a few more bucks. Then we have all the unwitting coconspirators claiming that legislation is government overreach and taking to much control over our lives. It would be laughable if the consequences weren't so grave.
