Doggie doors + Cats?

I'm sorry guys I wasn't very clear on my question! I want the dog to be able to come and go but not the kitties! (neither are SV but we plan on getting one in the next year which is why I am here!) Since where his house is was pretty much ground zero for the tornado the whole neighborhood is being rebuilt. It would be disastrous for a kitty to get out into that mess!
I would think it would be disastrous for a dog to get out into that mess as well! I think that if you want a doggie door it will have to either be put in a door leading from a room that the cats are banned from, or that leads out into an enclosure, because I doubt you'll be able to keep the cats from using it along with the dog.

We won't let him out alone until we have our fence up for sure!! We have talked about an enclosure before but not in regards to this house and this situation. I will definitely bring it up again! I want all my fur babies to be as happy as they can be!

Hey folks, who was the member in Netherlands who had a huge fence covered run behind his house? Was it Niels?
Mantha, there are some threads about enclosed cat runs.
Cbain, don't you have something like an enclosed run?
Yes our Savannah cats have a secure outside enclosure and love it, I did consider Purrfect fence and in the city and some other areas it would work fine , but in this area we do have some large breed dogs running loose so for posts I used 4x4 treated lumber and steel fencing nailed to the out side of the enclosure so if a dog pack jumped up on the fence it would not buckle in, we also have coyotes, raccoons and so on , the bottom of the fence is reinforced with 2x4's along the bottom so nothing goes under the wire , if we leave the house the cats come inside. If you build a enclosure make it strong , you don't want a aggressive dog or coyote cornering your pet in their enclosure.

I wouldn't mind making an enclosure that both the dog and cats could go out into like Brigitte mentioned. But not sure if we could do it considering our door leads straight to a deck. We'd have to not only enclose the deck but then part of the yard in front of the deck since we would not want the dog going to the bathroom on the deck. lol And since we might be moving in the next few years, easier to just let the dog out I think. :)

Easier but riskier... I know from experience (before we had the backyard enclosure) that letting the dog out means the kitties make breaks for that opened door...and any visitors you have to the house have to be carefully monitored...especially if any are smokers and just duck outside for a cigarette it seems some think leaving the back door cracked open is acceptable :-(

In my opinion not any riskier then using the front door which gets used a lot more then the back door since my husbands truck is too tall to fit in the garage. Our new home wish list does include an enclosed front and back porch. :)
