Met with the surgeon this morning and Dooley is scheduled for surgery around 3 this afternoon. The biggest risk is that of a seizure which often prove to be fatal. This is why they wanted Dooley on a regular regimen of Keppra for 30 days leading up to his surgery. Still there is about 17-18% fatality rate, about twice that of dogs.

The better news, is the surgeon who is performing the surgery did his residency with a doctor who pioneered many of the modern techniques in these surgeries. He's done more than a hundred liver shunt surgeries and in fact will be doing another feline surgery just Prior to Dooley's surgery. We are definitely very comfortable with him, as well as the resident working with him.

More good news is what they use to close the shunt gradually shuts it down over 6 weeks. So gone are the days of doing the surgery twice when not enough blood flow was restricted or worse when they used to cut the shunt off completely causing the liver or blood vessel to fail.

Hope to have good news to report in a few hours and God willing, we will be bringing our boy home tomorrow.

I'm very glad to know you have a surgeon who is experienced in this surgery. Looking forward to hearing a great report post-op!!

Dooley is out of surgery and in recovery. They didn't find a shunt as expected and what was revealed was significant liver disease. We won't have the biopsy report for several days and we will work with the internal medicine doctor to come up with a long term plan.

Sometimes the challenges we face seem unfair or overwhelming. Fortunately the road ahead of us won't present much time to think about it as we do our best to love our boy Dooley and manage his disease.

Thanks much for all the kind words and prayers.
