Update: Vet advised to bring him in for lab work if it continues. No changes in energy levels, bm, or appetite (all normal). Thanks all for your helpful wisdom.

Last evening my boyfriend and I were woken to the heaving... After today's vet call they want us to take a video and then they will determine plan of care.

If dry cough-chest xray/asthma
If wreching-bloodwork needed.

Yes, a 'hacking cough' can be asthma or upper respiratory infection. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference but if she's not vomiting it's prudent to consider alternative possibilities. Here is a YouTube of a cat with asthma:

I had a cat with asthma symptoms years ago and found that along with medication, changing from clay litter and improving food quality really helped.
