This site is Super and so are the people and free advice from breeders that know Savannah cats, I have some friends on my FB page from here and also learned a lot and had fun, recently I took our kitten in for a check up and asked our Vet, should we be feeding a vitamin and do Savannahs need more taurine and what is the dose? she told me, I never saw Savannah until you brought yours in, ask a Savannah breeder and I will order what you need. Hi Patti and Brigitte. We live in Southern PA and we drove to Nashville, TN to pick up Mango rather than have him shipped to us. The breeder told us that Mango had a runny nose because of his nasal vaccine and he informed us he may also have loose stool due to stress. And he has had both since he has gotten in our car. I don't think Mango picked up giardia here at home because we had a cat for 17 years (Sammy....a gentle and sweet tabby...we will miss him) and he had no issues with it whatsoever. I was thinking of calling or emailing the breeder just to make him aware of a possible infection among the other kittens, but my husband isn't sure if we should (this was our first time working with a breeder). We don't want to complain and we don't know what he could do about it anyway.

As far as a probiotic, the vet gave us Ensyl-F Lycine Treats to give to Mango along with his other meds. A PCR panel was not given to him and I don't think I heard any mention of it, but I could be wrong because all of the information was so overwhelming. The doxy was prescribed without hesitation, so my guess is the PCR was not mentioned. And yes!, the first round of meds was Panacur!

Mango is healthy and strong overall and such a great kitten! It's interesting that whenever I mention what kind of kitten he is that people get weirded out and call Mango a feral cat.....what?? Yes, he is an F1, but he is not mean or aggressive or feral by any means! Do you both get that too?

You both have gorgeous cats by the way! Thanks for all of your information...I'm new to all of this so I thank you for your time and patience with my posts :)

Cbain, I love the enclosure! I would love to do something like that for Mango, but for now he goes outside on a harness/leash. He loves it, but seems skittish when he hears kids screaming or cars going by in the background. I looked online about taurine....the lack of it....causing heart issues. Mango is on Orijen for his food because that's what his breeder recommended. Do you know if that's a good food source and taurine source? I love Casy and Cody!

Oh, I forgot to mention this other issue that has me somewhat concerned. The vet wanted to neuter Mango even though he is under six months because she said he is a big boy. But upon her exam, she told us that his testicles haven't descended and they may need to do this procedure by going through his abdomen. Is this normal? I know F1 males are sterile, so my question would be is neutering necessary then? So far he hasn't sprayed and he isn't displaying any "naughty" behavior, just the normal kitten type behavior. I don't want to put Mango through the ringer since he's been poked and prodded and medicated thus far in under 5 months.

We have 3 Savannahs and our female went wild when we put a walking jacket on her so I had a friend build this enclosure and made it as jungle as best I could and let our cats explore at their pace, we are secluded so kids and cars are no problem, I take a multivitamin/mineral tablet every day but my recent blood test and exam doc told me everything is good , better than most people but your B12 is very low so we need a new blood test and that got me thinking, Savannah cats need more taurine than normal cats and I see it listed on their cat food label but is it enough ? its fancy feast and after Casey cought a bird and tasted wild meat he gets raw hi end hamburger or ground round steak ounce a day. Nicaboli, I have a cabin in northern PA. in the mountains north of Kane, Allegany Natl, forest, logging tract in the middle.

Great that you drove to fetch Mango rather than had him in cargo, especially as it does seem that he started out sick.

I've given the nasal vaccine before and not seen kittens develop runny noses in reaction. And one certainly wouldn't expect any such reaction to continue more than a day or so. Was this his first vaccination and how many days prior to pickup was he given this? And how old was he then?

I would imagine you would know if PCR testing was done, it's expensive. A lot of vets avoid it for that reason, it is my belief (especially with kittens) that it can be a false economy to avoid it...as sometimes then you treat with the wrong antibiotic. I'm glad you are also giving the Lysine but that is not a probiotic. Lysine is an amino acid that works to prevent growth of the herpes family of viruses. Rhinotracheitis (one of the things we vaccinate for) is in the Herpes family. So with the runny nose giving Lysine is a sensible thing to do. Make sure he's getting the right amount each day and not just as a "treat".

How long has Mango been taking the doxy? My concern is that because there was no testing this might not be the appropriate antibiotic. It may be that in your area, your vet has been seeing a lot of Mycoplasma infections so is starting with this, but given you drove a long way to get Mango it may not be the predominant pathogen where he was located. If you don't find he is responding, do take back to your vet to discuss this. It's not a general enough antibiotic to work for all respiratory infections. But on the other hand, for some respiratory infections where this is appropriate you might need to treat with the doxycycline for a month which is longer than most vets initially prescribe it for.

Yes you should have informed the breeder, for the reason you have mentioned (the other kittens) but also because the average contract has a 72 hour health guarantee that requires notifying the breeder.

No, just because your former cat has not had giardia does not mean there is none in your water. We ALL have different sensitivities to bugs, if my husband and I eat something, if anyone is to get food poisoning it will be me not him! Or he'll have a mild case and I will be laid out with it.

It is normal for people to fear the "unknown" and very common for them to associate "exotic cat" with "wild" and hence "feral behavior". You need to explain that the Serval is the most domesticatable of the SMALL exotic cats and that they don't see humans as prey but actually like hanging out with them...hence a Savannah is a interactive companion that just looks "wild" but behaves like a very energetic domestic cat. It's really important to stress that the Savannah is a domestic cat breed btw...there's a lot of Animal Rights Extremists (like HSUS and PETA) that love to play up the "wild" factor and try to get our breed banned.

A nasal vaccine should not cause a runny nose, and I've never seen that. As Brigitte mentioned the PCR tests are quite expensive so you probably would have noticed had they tested for it. However, doxycycline treats all of the bacterial respiratory infections tested for on a URD PCR so perhaps why your vet started off with that antibiotic. Unfortunately, there is really no treatment for the viral infections except supportive care and treatment of any secondary bacterial infections.

You should definitely tell your breeder of the issues, but it would be more helpful if you knew exactly what you are treating. If the doxycycline and metronidazole aren't working then it may be time to talk to your vet about doing some specific testing such as the PCR panels.

You should definitely have Mango neutered - sooner rather than later. Just because he doesn't produce viable sperm doesn't mean he isn't producing all the male hormones that will cause him to spray and fervently seek out female companions. It is unfortunate if his testicles are undescended since it will require a more extensive surgery as your vet mentioned, but still a necessity before he starts spraying.

Did your vet feel around a bit for the undescended testicle. I'v had cases where my vet could push it down into the sac so it wasn't too far up... I think they can also do ultrasound beforehand so that they locate the testicle and aren't just digging around for it...

Definitely he needs to be neutered, but many vets will suggest waiting until 7 months to see if the testicle will drop to avoid the more invasive procedure. It's a risk you take though, as they can start spraying in the meantime...

Niacaboli, our enclosure is 25 x 25 and Mango would love it, there are more pictures it the section , things we like, enclosures . If want to build one let me know if I can help, Happy Savannahs have their paws in the dirt. I have not got any response on taurine doses but this is a holiday weekend. Good to see you here and the advice here is excellent, I ask here, first on many things, and have learned a lot on this site.

Sorry Carl, I wasn't quite sure what your question about taurine was. Savannahs in general should not need more taurine than any other domestic breed of cat, but I do give my breeding and pregnant mothers extra taurine in the form of chicken hearts, just to make sure.
