Excessive Nursing/Fabric Biting?

metonymy

Savannah Child
Hello all!

We recently got an F5 kitten and he has been absolutely wonderful! My main concern is it seems like whenever we pet him he starts kneading very enthusiastically and even bites on to fabric and sucks on it while he does that. He is doing it more and more every day and now he will wander off to continue nursing after we have petted him. He seems to prefer brown colored soft fabric. Is he just adjusting to not being around any other cats anymore? We got him at pretty much exactly 4 months old, so I don't think he left his mom too early, when we visited she certainly was ready for him to leave haha! He is extremely cuddly and will almost fall into my arms when I call for him. Such a sweet guy.

He also loves soft toys and will steal my wool dryer balls to cuddle with and do the same thing to. I don't mind it but want to make sure he is okay! I make sure he isn't biting holes out or swallowing any fabric, he has been gentle, but don't want him to be hurt and if there is something wrong I want to try to fix it ASAP! This is my first cat ever so I don't always know what to expect, and my husband (previous cat owner) hasn't seen behavior like this before!

This is actually not uncommon in kittens and is not specific to Savannahs. Just like different children will suck their thumbs longer than others, some kittens will suckle on inanimate objects after being weaned for differing lengths of time.

Be grateful he chooses something other than you. When my F1 came home last May we'd engage in intense snuggling sessions several times a day where he'd knead me and suckle on my top. I walked around half the time with large drool-drenched spots on my shirts. He's 14 months old now and still wants those snuggle sessions, still kneads, but instead of suckling, he drools and I still walk around with large drool-drenched spots on my clothes.:big grin:

Yeah, F1s and their drool - some of them are worse than dogs!
