eye ulcer

Not sure if it is possible, but is there anyway to securely wrap him in a blanket, support him with your legs while you add the drops? I have had to do that with cats before with similar medications. Not my first choice, but it is a choice.
I did it with him when he was a kitten and had to treat him for giardia and coccidia. He was much smaller then. He simply cannot handle being confined. If I got a blanket over him, I'd have to straddle him to apply the eye drops. He would go berserk. I don't want to risk him getting hurt and I don't want to risk losing the trust I worked so hard to earn from him these past 4 years when the vet is a better alternative.

Yes, I get a sedative and maybe borrow or find a "cat bag". Don't mess around with ulcers. My dog had one and it had to be surgically removed by a specialist which meant weeks of more drops. I also had a cat that had a similar issue. You just have to try to be clever. I had to do drops 4 times a day with 2 different drops. The drops had to be done 5 minutes apart of each other. Okay, forget that, I just had to catch her and get them done! After a while she wanted nothing to do with me and would run if she saw me approach her. I was sad as she is my favorite cat and very affectionate. Eventually she forgave me and her eye is fine.

What about the clothespin trick? at all possible with Maliik? Or maybe a natural herbal sedative in his water every day until his medication is done? There was a melatonin-based sedative that I used with my feral, I think I got it from petco, and a chamomile one that I used for a while with Dante, not sure where I got that one.

I'm glad the vet is having another look at it...hopefully the corneal stain will show healing and maybe you don't even need to do the drops? I don't know how bad the injury or resultant infection was...

I agree, the kind of battle that wrapping and pinning him to put eye drops in could really set back your relationship. I would be inclined to go the sedative route to avoid that...or the stay at the vet while they earn his ire instead!

For cats that relax well when you scruff the back of the neck, but there is only one of you to handle the cat... you can use a clothespin to pinch up and hold the fur on the back of the neck, leaving your two hands free to work on your cat. It can work with some cats, not all of them though...

Thanks for the info... Still new and learning...

We dodged a bullet! The scratch has sealed/healed sufficiently that he doesn't need the drops. There was no infection. Whatever happened, happened when I was out of the house between 10 a.m.-1 p.m. yesterday and I had him at the emergency vet at 2:30. We were lucky this time.

Since he had to be sedated to have his eye reexamined, I had them do a dental since he was due and trim his nails too. He is so relieved that he doesn't have the cone on. The vet was surprised that he had a significant build up of plaque on his back teeth since he is on a whole prey diet. I tried to keep him in the office for a few hours when we got home but he kept hurling himself at the door. He wanted out. He is now snoozing in my bedroom.

Fantastic news... Be a good idea to let him sleep.. But remember the more he sleeps the more energy he will have later... Those Savannah Batteries never over charge and they just keep getting bigger.

That's great news, Deborah! I am sure you are very relieved, and good idea to have a dental exam done while he was under sedation....I bet your boy is happy the clown cone is no more!
