F2 acting strange...not eating

Hi, long time no post on here....been busy trying to find a job.

So over the past 2 days, my F2 has been acting unusual.

Yesterday, he was very "lovey" to me and sat in my lap on the couch as I was watching t.v. Once in the afternoon, once in the evening. He's not one for showing that kind of affection unless he wants something.

Both yesterday morning and today morning.....he rubbed his face all over me when I was in bed. Last night and the night before, he slept in the bed with me, which again is unusual.

He's just a stand-offish kinda cat most of the time. He lets me pet him and starts purring whenever I do....but him sitting in my lap when I'm on the couch is extremely rare.

So I give the cats two cans of wet food in the morning, and a bowl of Royal Canine dry is left out in the 2nd bedroom for whenever they are hungry.

I switched to a new brand of wet food because I want to put variety in the wet food that they eat. I figured it would help improve the quality of their lives if they were given variety in their diet.

So this new, very expensive brand of wet food costs me $1.59/can and I give them 2 cans in the morning.

He refuses to eat it.

So the combination of him being "lovey" to me and not eating wet food.....do you think there is something wrong?

This wet food looks (to me at least) like it is very tasty.

Hills Ideal Balance Roasted Turkey Recipe was the brand I fed him this morning. He refused to eat the same brand in chicken and salmon as well.

Also, can you recommend a good, but relatively inexpensive wet food brand? For about 2 months, I was feeding them: Purina Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Poultry & Beef Feast Variety Cat Food 24-3 oz. Cans in the morning because I find a killer deal that made each can only .30 after buying in bulk at Target. I stopped feeding them that because I got the feeling that Purina is not healthy to feed them.

thanks

Did the snubbing begin with the introduction of the new food? Will he eat the old food?
If so, you may have to slowly introduce the new food - add in a very, very small amount of the new into the old and gradually increase it.

Fancy Feast is actually pretty decent cat food with chicken as the second ingredient behind broth. They are probably one of the better cheap cat foods out there although feeding him one that is grain free like their "Purely" line would be better. I have never been able to get any of my cats to eat Hills no matter what I did.

As far as him being more lovey - has he been purring excessively? Any change in the weather or anything else that might prompt him to want more contact?

Ummm yeah, he usually eats wet food like a ravenous banshee in the morning. He inhales rather than chews.

Ok, is Purina junk food?

And yeah....we lived in Southern California for the past 4 years. In August we moved to Idaho. The past 3 weeks the weather has gotten down to 30 degrees. Last night it was 18 degrees. Neither myself nor the cats have experienced anything this cold in our entire lives.

Not to mention I'm trying to keep my heating bill down.....so I don't run central heat in my 2 bedroom apartment all day long. I have a space heater in the bedroom and both cats sleep there at night.

Do you think the weather has something to do with it? I like it because the cats are extremely warm and when they curl up next to me, it allows me to sit on the couch and not run the heater. So they are like a warm water bottle lol.

Could he be filling up on the dry food? Maybe the weather change has him eating more at night so he's not as ravenous in the morning?

As far as food goes, go to the Savannah Cat Diet/Raw Food section here and check out some of the links about commercial foods. Figure the things you don't want in their diet like grain or carrageenan and then try to find an affordable food that they like. Not easy, I know it's always a compromise. When I find new foods I only buy a can or two and just give them a tiny taste for a few days to see if they will even go for it and continue going for it. If they do then I follow Rafiki's advice about mixing it gradually if I am switching the main food. I continue giving tiny tastes until I am sure that their systems are used to it and the new food is not resulting in soft or runny bowel movements. Then I add it as an alternative food.

I see nothing wrong with feeding Purina products. The newer, designer pet products are often recalled and I do not believe Purina products have ever been recalled. I would go back to his old food - if it isn't broke, don't fix it :)

Maybe you can get some freeze-dried chicken treats to give him as a treat as well as some chicken hearts...my cats love that, but they only get them as treats...that will add some variety!

As for heat...you may not want to keep it too cold for them - and please be careful about leaving a space heater on all day if they are alone!

Just because the package reads well doesn't mean it is sourced well. Purina is known to be shady and cut corners. To me, saving a bit on food isn't worth the risk

Yah...I know many people that feed it and cannot afford anything else, so I am not going to judge what people feed their cats - sorry everyone...I know my own 2 cats that I had in my 20's lived to be 21 and 22 on Purina products...I did not know any better then, but the bottom line is I am just not going to judge...

I also keep a cool house at night and last night was a three cat night. So, I would guess some of the behavior change is from the weather.

On the food front, I have one cat that will only eat kibble and canned. Party Animal is the current brand he will eat.

Good luck on your job hunt. In my misspent youth I lived in Craigmont, ID.
