fibrosis of the liver

I know that he had said to wait a bit before starting her on the Atopica but I don't even know what it is for.
Wow, Atopica is cyclosporin which is used as an anti-rejection agent in transplant patients! It's used for dogs and cats for atopic dermatitis and eosinophilia. I wonder if I had used it on my girl if we could have gotten EG under control...

I know that you must be in shock. There are a lot of scholarly articles out there about feline fibrosis so I don't think that it's unheard of. Having no medical training, most were too complex for me. Please read these with a positive mindset and do not let worst case scenario get to you. There was another article that I didn't bookmark that was discussing loss of appetite in regards to a sensitivity to something in foods that could cause liver issues and it also spoke of restricted protein diet to help give the liver a chance to regenerate. Forgive me for not remembering more but I will find that one again and post the link once I do.

If she were mine Linda, I would feel the same. I would do anything and everything for them. Have they done any scans besides the liver?

It took a few months and lots of testing for my friends docs to figure out the cause of his liver problems and I am guessing it will be the same for Rafiki. My friend was so frustrated but the doctor told him that all they could do was test and rule things out until they found the problem. Detective work, a doctor who really listens, and a patient who remembers all the symptoms no matter how small.

These are a few that were more comprehensive to me. They list major and minor possibilities. Keep positive thoughts for the minors and something easily treatable. Hugs.

She had gone in for an ultrasound as a result of elevated bilirubin. After the ultrasound they recommended a full liver biopsy (the month prior we had done a needle biopsy primarily to rule out things like lymphoma). Everything else was negative. Negative for cancer, negative for infections. Not sure what other scans or what else to look for at this point. The copper test results should be back on Wednesday.

You've already ruled out a lot of things so now it's just waiting for test results to figure it out. I should have gone back to the old thread so that I would have remembered all of the things that came back negative. My heart is with both you and Rafiki, along with my hopes and prayers.

I have spent the last few days doing research. I spoke to the vet on Sunday regarding supplements. Along with Mazuri, I have been giving her taurine, B12 (with Intrinsic Factor) and I wanted to know about SAM-e, Milk Thistle and vitamin K. He said yes to all.

The research, what little there is on Feline liver Fibrosis, is interesting. A couple of studies have given me hope. It seems that they have compared the liver of various animals and the regenerative properties. Human and rat livers can repair themselves but dog livers cannot. Cat livers appear much more similar to rat. Could it be that liver fibrosis is so rare in cats because the cat liver can repair itself?

Could be... Although if a cat is sick with liver issues and not treated, I don't know how the liver would repair itself... I take milk thistle myself for liver issues and have changed my diet... I think you are doing the best for Rafiki...
