fibrosis of the liver

Last night was a rough one. She only came out briefly from under the bed but the minute that Steve or I would approach her, she would dart back in. Poor traumatized baby girl! She was hungry though. Between the hours of 6 and 8, I gave her 3 meals of 1 oz pureed chicken breast with almost as much added liquid so it was very soupy. Added a bit of freeze-dried duck tenders and she gobbled it down. I laid down next to the bed around 9:30 and stayed with her. Around 9:50, I could see that she was uncomfortable. Her back right leg was having a spasm and she kept rolling on her back and stretching her legs. She had 3 of these episodes. After the 3rd one, she was finally in a position that I could squirt the kitty-morphine into her mouth without her choking. She gave me an odd look but relaxed almost immediately. She fell asleep soon after. I stayed with her until about 10:40. At 2 am, I came back and stayed with her for another 45 minutes but she did not have any issues. She slept with my hand on her belly.

This morning her eyes were clear and alert but she stayed under the bed. I was rather bummed when I went for my early morning walk. As I returned to the house, I kept thinking about how I would give anything to have her do her usual flip flop routine on the landing. I opened the door and started up the first flight of stairs when I heard a plop. I rounded the corner and started up the 2nd flight and there was baby girl, flip flopping away and looking cute as could be! As I approached her, she did her "I want" motion with her front legs and rolled over on her back so that I could pet that adorable spotted belly. In return for a thousand pets and kisses, I received a couple of head butts and 2 half-hearted attempts at biting my nose.

During all of this, Steve was in the spare bedroom ironing a shirt. He had no idea that she had left the room and just assumed that she was still under the bed. Unfortunately, when he came down the hallway, she freaked out and ran back under the bed. :( I gave her a bit of food under the bed and chased away Jammu-pig. I will continue to give her small meals with lots of fluids through out the day. She is still an extremely sick little girl but at least this morning I have hope.

Part of the heartbreak of caring for an acutely ill animal is the fear and distrust we generate by 'forcing' treatments on them when they don't understand why we're doing it. I feel so bad for Rafiki, and am continuing to pray for healing.

She's back! Current crisis averted????

I fed her small meals (1 oz chicken breast + .75 oz fluids) spaced apart thru the morning and again in the evening on Monday. She ate with enthusiasm. She was still extremely skittish around Steve - poor guy seems to be getting the blame for all the current torture inflicted upon her little kitty body. I stayed with her from 9:30 pm to around 10 to make sure that she was comfortable. No episodes like the night before. Then around midnight, I had a delightful surprise - she came to bed for cuddles! She left around 4 hours later when I got up in the wee hours to use the restroom.

This morning, she followed me to the restroom and went thru her normal goofball routine. She plopped down on the throw rug, showed her belly and did the "I want" with her front paws. We had a delightful cuddle session with lots of head butts and pretend nose bites. She feels good. I can tell that she is now fully hydrated and her fur now feels softer as well. Unfortunately, when Steve got up, she got skittish again. She did run to the bathroom at the end of his shower for her usual after-shower cuddles but did not engage in the usual pre-shower chatter and head butts that she normally does with him. She has been primarily out and about this morning but still dives under the bed if both of us approach her at once.

She is scheduled for a Bile Acid Tolerance test tomorrow. For this test, she needs to fast for 12 hours and they take blood. Then she will be fed a fatty meal and they take blood again 2 hours later to see how well the liver is processing. I am thinking that I will call them and postpone this test. I want her to feel more relaxed around us instead of thinking that she is headed to the vet every time we approach her. That kind of stress cannot be good. Also, I am worried about the strain the test will have on a liver that was just traumatized.

What do you guys think?

Personally, I would go with my gut, Linda. If you feel she should be allowed to just relax for a while then do it. I would. And Also, I am so relieved she is better. Let's keep up the good progress.
Oh, just as a side note, once you STOPPED the meds, she IMPROVED. MAYBE she does not need the meds.... just an idea.

I agree she shouldn't have the test just yet. Give her liver time to recover a little bit before fasting her again. And let her regain some trust. I'm so glad she is feeling better!! I hope she continues to improve!

I agree, Linda. Go with your gut feelings on postponing the test. As long as she is doing better, and continues to do so, allowing her to enjoy feeling good and trusting you is important as well.

Fingers crossed for you both!
