Okay so a friend of mine is in school to be a vet tech. She had just purchased a relatively new brand flea collar that a lot of vets try to keep hush hush because it works so well. According to what she has heard. It is called seresto and lasts 8 months. any opinions on flea collar versus liquid versus homeopathic options? I do like to use natural when at all possible but my concern is hat works best, and what is the safest route ? Are there any ingredients I need to watch out for?

I get advantage free as I work at the vet, so that is what I use. I know there are home remedies you can use, but they are for dogs and usually essential oils which can't be used with cats. I only put it on Zeddie and Tiger when I am worried about fleas/ticks. They don't go outside often enough for me to be overly concerned, and there aren't any hiding places for ticks (not that the flea treatment actually prevents ticks).

For me, the toxicity isn't worth a constant monthly application. If they come into contact with anything that has anything to do with fleas (a new puppy, someone who's pet has recently had fleas, or if I see an influx in fleas) then I apply it for that month.

I didn't think essential oils could be used with cats. Well thinks like eucalyptus at least. And toxicity is what I would be worried about but in the summer I go outside a lot and if I did take he or she with me I wouldn't want to worry. It's not something I have to worry about right away I Was just curious. Which flea treatments should I stay away from at all costs? I think I heard of someone's cat getting extremely sick after applying medicine. It would break my heart if that happened.

At the vet we have seen some serious skin damage from the flea collars, so I personally would stay away from those. I prefer the stinky ointment to them.

I'm not a fan of flea collars...mine are so prone to removing each other's collars for entertainment I can't even keep a normal collar on them...but what if they removed the collar and chewed it up?

I use AdvantageII right now, but we don't have a heavy flea problem here...

http://www.amazon.com/Bayer-Seresto-Flea-Tick-Collar/product-reviews/B00B8CG5NK seems to say mainly positive reviews but there are reports of skin reactions so that would be something to be aware of.

I use Revolution. We live near the beach, so both fleas and sand fleas are something we need to be aware of. I also have a neighbor who keeps pigs (no I am not kidding) as pets, and they have broken through the fence more than once, so I have to worry about mites too. I apply it to all three kitties, year round.

I've heard that people have used diatomaceous earth with good success, both directly on the cat and in the environment as well.
