I am not surprised if your vet has not heard of Savannahs. Mine were the first my vets had seen or even heard of the breed They actually have several Bengals they have seen for years, and were familiar with them, but were very eager and open to a bit o' education about Savannahs and impressed with how very well behaved mine are while at the vets.

I'm sorry your vet felt the need to show some force in pilling Leo...and too funny about the pill rolling across the floor. Your vet deserved that one

I work at the vet Zeddie goes to, but when I went up to reception to have her added onto my billing account she told me "there is no such thing as savannahs" because it wasn't in the computer.
Just because you don't know what it is, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. My vet put in the right info for me though

My Savannah is the first of the SV breed to be seen at my vet as well. The majority of the staff have never heard of SV's. The closest cat they see is the Bengal. They loved Savannah when they met her, and they always go crazy over her when she has her visits

Please read up on Consumer complaints & reviews of Blue Wilderness. I no longer feed Blue to my cats or dogs since there have been complaints by pet owners who report their furbabies getting ill and a few dying.

I appreciate your concern, but there isn't a single brand on that website that has positive reviews. I read the reviews for Blue Buffalo and 90% of them don't seem to have a lot of merit other than my dog or cat ate this and was sick and then we fed it to him/her again and he got sick again. There is no doubt in my mind that there easily could be acute cases of spoiled food sold in stores that made their animals very sick. But, this is something that probably happens to any manufacturing company including human foods. I'm embarrassed to say as a food scientists that I'm not quite sure how pet food is regulated different than human food. All I know is that pet food must contain GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) ingredients and procedures set forth by the FDA. Also, Blue Buffalo's ingredients are very different than Blue Wilderness so it could vary. The reason for whatever consumer's bad experience with their pets and Blue could be endless. You also have to take into consideration that these are the few people that had a bad experience.

Please don't misunderstand me and think I don't think your concerns are not valid. I'm actually slowly converting him to raw food, and this just gives me even more reason to make the switch. With the research you have done with consumer reports and such, can you recommend me a brand you feel comfortable with? I have heard good things about Taste of the Wild, but the ingredients are very similar to Blue Wilderness and the stores near me have Blue Wilderness in stock. Thanks again!

They actually had pictures of Bengals up on the wall, so I was actually kind of surprised when the receptionists didn't know about Savannah's. Then again it was a chain Vet so they probably just work there.

Agreed, Matt, over time it seems every commercial food has some issue. And yes, sometimes the minority is loud...people are definitely more motivated to leave a review when they have a gripe. I almost found it entertaining recently when using Trip Advisor to plan an overseas trip, some of the negative comments were so ridiculous that it was funny...and did not dissuade me from that hotel for example.

I did once have an issue with Blue Buffalo but it was their dog kibble. We ended up with our beagle in the emergency hospital a few times with gastrointestinal distress before we pinpointed the issue. They add garlic to their dog kibble, and he's very sensitive to it. Garlic is not good for dogs or cats but most dogs are okay with low levels of it ,but it seems my dog is not. I've had to since read all the labels carefully for this, as lots of the more holistic types of dog food seem to add it :-( Doesn't make the food bad, just bad for my dog!

Garlic helps with ear infections in dogs...maybe that is why it is added?

Matt - take a look at Fromm's Four Star Variety of dry and canned food. They've been around a while and haven't ever had a recall as far as I know. It's locally owned and produced in Wisconsin
