After almost 2 weeks with Satchmo I just wanted to provide you an update of how the time with him went so far.
He's been bonding to everyone perfectly. As soon as we (human part of the family) are on the couch, he wants to lay on someone's tummy, if we sit at the dining table, he wants to sit on someone's lap, if we are staying somewhere (preferred living room or bath room) he is in the mood for cuddling and we are not acting quickly enough he will just jump and climb up the body part where he'd like to be.
Climbing body parts (preferred legs and back to sit/sleep on my shoulders (he loves to sit and sleep on my shoulders)) is not the funniest experience and he definitely has to learn that he can reach that goal another way as well.
Our plan of bringing Satchmo and Mr. Clooney together however didn't go as expected. The initial plan was to bring them together slowly. Besides from Satchmo escaping almost every 2nd time when we tried to leave his room (dang, this beast is like a snake. He finds the smallest whole and makes his way through it at the speed of light) it was as followed:
Step 1: Satchmo was in a separate room. No cat complained about the other. Not even sure if they smelled each other because they were SO cool.
Step 2: We switched rooms. Mr. Clooney went to Satchmo's room and Satchmo had the chance to explore the rest of the apartment for 1-2h. Mr. Clooney didn't like the foreign smell in the room and was really careful in figuring out what happened there. Satchmo didn't care about a foreign smell at all and ran through the apartment right away. We did this switch several times.
Step 3: Separate the floor from the living room with a laundry rack. We wanted to give them the chance to see and smell each other without being able to attack the other and giving them the chance to escape whenever they want. Again: Mr. Clooney was a bit careful with Satchmo, but didn't show ANY aggression at all (ears and tail were always up). There was barely hissing from Mr. Clooney at all and absolutely no hissing from Satchmo at all. Well, for Satchmo, he was searching for every possible way through and over the laundry rack. It was almost impossible to hold him back from getting in the living room. But we managed it somehow. Afterwards we brought Satchmo back to his room and we called it a day....we thought.
As we tried to go to bed (I was sleeping with Satchmo in his room, Mr. Clooney wherever else he wanted) and my wife tried to leave Satchmo's room, he again escaped, ran right into the living room and was staying in front of Mr. Clooney. We decided to give them a few seconds just to see how they behave. Result: Nothing happened. No attack, no hiss, no nothing. Well, Mr. Clooney tried to scare him with a hiss or two but instead of running away Satchmo went over to him to sniff his nose. No reaction from Mr. Clooney. Also no further attempt to get him out of his territory. Instead of separating them again we gave them 30-40min to get to know each other but didn't let them hang around together during the night. So many impressions require a night alone to think about it all.
The next day we continued this and extended their time together. Whenever we had to leave the apartment both were separated though.
Long story short: Everything went MUCH smoother than I expected. I expected a lot of trouble and fights but nothing of that happened. Instead they became a pretty good team very fast. Impressions below.
