Hello From Malaysia & Advice Needed

Hi everyone!

I've recently adopted a 2 year old F1 from a dear friend whose family could no longer live with him. He was part of a pair of male SVs they bought - one grew a lot bigger while the smaller one developed a habit of marking everywhere. The two SVs got along fine but the smaller one kept marking, became very vocal and was in turn not allowed out of the room they were kept in (the bigger SV was allowed to roam the house every now and again). I'm sure this didn't make things better for the smaller one.

Two months ago my husband and I adopted him and we see the problem. We have 6 other cats who freely roam the house and outdoors. He has his own room, a spacious one with cat trees and three litter boxes but still marks everywhere in the room. I work from home and when I'm doing work, I let him out into the bigger room outside of his but he goes crazy trying to get out and making his displeasure heard - when he's not going around marking everything he can, that is.

I spend a lot of time with him, from playing to sometimes taking him for a walk on a leash (that's also a work in progress). He's no lap cat and not all cats are, I know, but this one is constantly on edge and climbing cupboards and book cases. I give him a lot of affection every chance I can though I have had to take a tetanus shot thanks to his temperamental ways - sometimes, out of nowhere, he lashes out and bites me, hard. His cuts are deep and often take up to a week to heal.

Trying to introduce him to our other cats have been in vain. I've tried feeding them on either sides of the door, he just goes crazy trying to get at them. As the other cats are social, outdoor cats, they don't really pay him any attention unless he comes charging and hissing at them. This has happened a few times when he managed to get the door open without me realizing. But I always catch them in time before a fight breaks.

I've heard that F1s are harder to break so could really use some help - would love to avoid re-homing him again.

First question is if he's neutered? Second is if he's had a COMPLETE vet exam?

And have you tried Feliway diffusers? Also does he mark on horizontal surfaces or vertical surfaces? Does he use the litter boxes at all? What kind of litter have you tried? What kind of litter boxes? (Hooded, open, top entry, front entry, etc).

He tends to mark vertical surfaces but also pulls clothes down from the clothing rack and pees on those. Yes, have tried the Feliway diffuser but doesn't seem to be working. He does use the litter box for both number 1 and 2 and between the 3 litter boxes, there's clay as well as pine litter for him to choose from. All open litter boxes.

Oh and yes, he's been neutered.

Does sound like true marking, not just him not liking the litter box. Spraying on vertical surfaces and also on soft surfaces (clothing) seem like 2 different things. Has he had bloodwork and urinalysis done to rule out any health issues? Including something getting missed during his neuter? I think you would definitely benefit from a consult with Marilyn Krieger the Cat Coach. http://m.thecatcoach.com/?url=http://www.thecatcoach.com/&dm_redirected=true#2752

Ditto to everything already said. If Marilyn's suggestions (should you decide to consult with her) don't work, talk to your vet about putting him on Prozac. It has been effective in helping with inappropriate urination and as well as other behavioral issues. One of my boys has been on it for a year and our house went from tension and chaos to calm.

I agree with all of the above and suspect at this point medications (i.e. Prozac) may be the best option. First though, if your vet has the resources you should ask you him to confirm that his neuter was successful. You can start with an ultrasound to look for any leftover testicular tissue and if that's not revealing I believe you can get a blood test checking his testosterone level, which will help determine if the original neutering vet somehow missed some testicular tissue.

Also, if it is at all feasible, you might want to consider building an outdoor enclosure for him, preferably one that is attached to his room (with window or doggie door access in and out).

Apologies for the delayed response. Thank you so much for all the suggestions. I've just written to the catcoach and will hope for the best. Will also take him to the vet so they can check if his misbehavior is medical related. On another note, what is the best way to introduce my SV to the rest of the fur family? I have 6 other cats and have tried to slowly introduce them one by one to him but with each attempt he started to get aggressive so I'm a little scared to keep trying.

Thanks
