It does sound a little familiar, Julie, hope it isn't suspiciously the same thing and just a story someone is using to sell kittens...

"My mother-in-law wanted some Savannah's after I had talked to her about them and she found a great deal here in Oklahoma. The breeder passed away and her granddaughter inherited her cattery and she had 30+ kittens to get rid of. She says all the mothers got pregnant around the same time. I felt bad for them though because the granddaughter has no interest in cats, she just wants to get rid of them as quickly as possible. So we don't have papers for any of them because she doesn't know where they are or doesn't know how to go about doing it."

Welcome Brooke, I'm glad you found this sight. It is an excellent resource that has a ton of knowledgeable people. The advice everyone is giving is spot on. 6 weeks is old enough in many cases with a normal kitten. But Savannahs are much different in the development cycle. They take up to 2 years to be fully mature adults and shouldnt be removed from their mother until 12 weeks. So being only 6 weeks old (sounds about right as your kitty is still in the fuzzy stage) it is imperative that you pay very close attention as the immune system is not yet fully developed. Continue his current diet for anout another 6-8 weeks, then u can start mixing in the food that you want to eventually change over to. The reason diarhea can be so dangerous to kitties is because of dehydration. Dehydration is often lethal to a kitten as dehydration means they're not getting enough oxygen into their blood stream and organs. This then causes organs to fail, I think we all know where it goes from there. So for this reason try not to change his current diet. Also you dont know how well he was being cared for before you got him, so definitely have him checked out by a vet. Hopefully he's plenty healthy and you have nothing to worry about. As they say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Where are you located, maybe someone can recommend a good vet that is already familiar with Savannahs and their health quirks. For example, many vets not familiar with sv's often think here may be a heart issue, but sv's (particularly early gen) often have a slightly different heart rate than a domestic cat. We're all pulling for you and dont be scared off, we're just trying to make sure you dont go through the heartbreak that others have experienced.

Okay wait... doesn't this sound like the story of the girl who got 2 or 3 savannahs from a similar situaton. One was a smoke, lokey? Or something like that?? Anyone?

Welcome though, and again vet asap, and don't change the food.

Oh, my, yes! Is this the same person (breeder)? I know two of her kittens died unexpectedly. I hope yours is okay! I think Savannah Rescue can help if this woman is in a nursing home and they need to find homes for the cats. In any case, it sounds like she has too many to properly care for and needs some help.

Congrats on the cute kitten! I agree with what everyone has said (I am late to the party!!). This is a GREAT place to ask questions and share pics :) And vet trip is a must. Any kitten you would take should be seen by a vet within 3 days. Let us know how you make out and of course updated pics of the cutie is a must!

Thanks for all the input! Sorry its been a while since I replied, I've just been super busy. Kitty is doing well though, his eyes are almost all cleared up and he got his first set of vaccinations. He is growing fast, and becoming more and more curious and playful as each day goes by. My boyfriend and I are completely in love with him, he is the most adorable thing ever! We still haven't decided on a name though. We were considering Kovu, but we just haven't felt like we've come across the perfect one yet. I'll try to post more pictures within the next week or two and keep you guys updated. :)

Edit: In regards to the person who had the similar situation, it is quite possibly the same lady. I got my baby in OKC and the lady said she had been working on getting rid of the kittens for a few months now. She even mentioned something about the smokes looking like rats when they were babies lol. Whether it is a scam or not.. She seemed sincere, but I suppose anything's possible.
