Hello!

Hi Im new to this forum and I just got an F2 male from A1savannah. Heres a pic of him 4 months old. Hes very active and friendly (except when the dog is around). He loves to raw chicken but im not sure how often to feed him a drum stick. How often do you guys recommend?

All the best,

Welcome, Daniel! Anubis looks to be very excited to be outside :)

Do you let him out without being leashed? I'd be very concerned about that as Savannahs can move quickly and I'd hate for Anubis to be running around outside without you being able to find him... I suggest either leash-training him with a secure cat walking jacket or looking into building an enclosure for him to be outside safely...or pet fencing which can also work well (and may be what you have already?). Savannahs are not confined by tall fences, they need that pet fencing addition to the top curving in to really be effective.

As to the chicken question, it depends on how much raw you wish to feed. If you are okay with him having a totally raw diet then as much as he wants, just make sure you are adding a supplement to the chicken legs so he gets all the nutrients he needs. I find my cats vary, some love kibble, some love canned and some want only raw meat... and some a combination.

Hello Brigitte, yes im concerned that he can wonder outside and get lost, or worse run over or stolen! He seems to want to constantly explore. My egyptian mau does this often even outside the premise of the house but he always comes back. Im considering neutering him to diminish somewhat he's need to roam, but im not sure if this will help much. For now I am keeping him indoors and in the patio with close supervision. A cat leash is definitely a good idea I will order one soon.
Thanks for the advice!

Cats that are allowed free indoor/outdoor access have approximately half the lifespan of indoor only cats... so I'd consider keeping him (and your Mau) indoors only except for leashed walks. Yes, all of those things can happen with cats and of course we don't want ANY of those to happen!

Um, ok... you may not like what I say next, but it needs to be said. Are you NUTS??? Honestly you might as well have taken your money and flushed it down the toilet or given it to a homeless person if you are going to let an F2 Savannah roam outdoors! If he doesn't get lost, hit by a car or injured in a fight with some other critter, he will most definitely be picked up and someone will be counting themselves lucky to have your cat. Next... you are "considering having him neutered"?? He doesn't know he is sterile and will mark and spray and howl just like any other intact male cat. Just because the sperm is not there or properly formed doesn't mean he doesn't have the same hormones. Please get him neutered before he is 6 months old to avoid these behaviors. He will be a better pet and you won't regret not having it done while trying to "de-stink" your home.

wow ok im glad I joined this forum for advise! Im making an appointment for him to get neutered tomorrow!

Sorry if that sounded harsh. Every year we see people desperate to find their Savannahs. They tend to be easily distracted and get lost. A nice outdoor enclosure would give them their outside time in a safe environment. Heck if you make it large enough you can hang out there with them, put in a kiddie pool, etc. Its quite fun to sit outside and watch your two cats and play. And yes, you will be very glad you had him neutered! :)

What else are you feeding him?

All my cats from A1 Savannahs and I hope that you have their care sheet for 1st month - "
1. Twice a week:
Twice a week the kitten can have a RAW chicken drum stick WITH the BONE. The bone is safe and important for the kitten’s nutritional needs. Please DO NOT offer any part of the chicken that contains no bones. That would lead to an unbalanced diet that can cause growth problems. "
