Help! Cat won't stop peeing on the bed!

Hey Matt! Welcome :) I am so sorry your boy's issues still have not resolved :(

Did you talk to Marilyn Krieger, the Cat Coach, as of yet? Also- did you do a full vet work-up on him to ensure there are no crystals/blockages?

Trish, he has been amazing outside of just a couple of things. We think it is mainly anxiety related because he uses the litterboxes regularly. Very rarely does he use the litterboxes when we are not here. My girlfriend (Renee) rarely has to clean anything when she gets home from work (maybe he sleeps all day?). We are going to try and radio on quietly during the day and are going to contact a local cat coach who our vet recommends as she can come to our apartment and get to see him. Would you recommend us contacting Marilyn instead? We thought it would be a good idea for someone to come and see him.

Eolsurion - We just have a cotton comforter which we had on the bed right when we got him. We had no problems for 2~3 weeks after we got him so we don't believe that is it. It is also covered in plastic and yet he still goes.

Dantas - Renee does say the pee was an amber/darker color today and it has been before as well. Maybe there is some blood there. We took him to the vet and we brought his urine in and there were no problems. Maybe it is the food. Would you mind sending me a link to the food that you use? We did try the Felidae cat spray which seemed to work for a little while but it wears off VERY quickly.

Thanks guys/gals for the input! We are hopeful to get it resolved because he is already part of the family!

Yes, Matt has contacted us about Luxor some time ago, but as I hadn't heard more from him I figured that: (1) the problem was resolved, or2) he'd contacted Marilyn and was working on it with her guidance. I am sorry to hear it was (3) none of the above :-(

I think I did tell you that Nature's Miracle is not a very effective enzyme cleaner, and to instead use either AntiIckyPoo or Unique Distributor's Odor Eliminator, both of which are tried and trusted products. Soak overnight and then launder in fragrance free laundry detergent and no bleach.

There were many suggestions, but that sprang to mind when I read what you wrote. But if you've identified a behavior...him peeing when you didn't pay him attention...it just may be that you need to play for 2 minutes on entering the home no matter what?

I think Marilyn would be the best option still though!

Hello Brigitte,

We thought the problem was resolved because he did not pee on the bed for a little over 2 weeks. Then, it happened again. We are now going to contact a behaviorist. We did try most of the things that Marilyn suggested on her website. It is just confusing because it is not consistent and then it will happen 2 times in a week and then it wont happen for another 2 weeks. It could possibly be an anxiety issue on our end, however, I do not believe that I was anxious when I came home today. I did play with him when I got home as usual, however, once I went to change my clothes, the 2 seconds I was not paying attention to him he peed on the bed which is 1 foot away from the litter box.

Thanks

Renee

I really think you should consult Marilyn, not just the general info on her website, she will ask you hundreds of questions and be able to specifically and individually tailor a plan for you.
And Marilyn is a super sweet, knowledgeable lady. I know people probably think we are all crazy pushing her, but most of us have met her in person and had fun interacting with her and picking her brain. In fact, she was showing me how to clicker train Simon, my F1, at the TICA Annual in Northern California one year :D

We push Marilyn simply because we have known her for years and see how much good she does. Another animal behaviorist may well be as good, but make sure you can get a number of references so you aren't wasting your time and money :)

Brigitte and Trish,

Thanks for the help again! We aren't ignoring your recommendations, we are following them. I read through the entire Marilyn thread you all had about a month ago and it was a lot of help! We aren't at all regretful of taking him. We love him to death! Just trying to alleviate some of his quirks =p

Our boy had that problem too when he first came home so what I did was place a couple of small bowls of kibble (two or three bits should work. just for the smell) randomly around the bed and since cats usually won't use the bathroom around food it worked like a charm. So far so good!

I recently sold a kitten that had what I thought were serious litter box issues. The fellow hired the cat coach (Marilyn) which I even offered to fund her for him. About the same as a private dog trainer to have her come to your house and less if on line. The problems were all from the owner really, small litter boxes in appropriate placed, the wrong litter, stuff everywhere. She was able to help him with this as it was something he did not see. His first cats were litter trained and older. Not a baby which can get easily confused if things aren't clear for him. Her advice was invaluable and I learned things too!

I've had multiple Feliway burners running since I got him. I think Feliway helps for some problems, and maybe it helps a little for this but I couldn't say for sure.

I don't know if it's food related, it's just that before the first episode I had started giving him Taste of the Wild dry. That's when there was blood in the urine, it started just a little dark and then one day I saw the actual blood. Then he came on a trip with me where he was fine the entire time (he was also the only pet with me for several months). When I got back from the trip I got home late and gave him just a bit of dry food and within the week it all started again. So it seems likely, only that the last month or so he's had NO dry food at all and is still doing it.

And also marilyn owns a savannah, which IMO, helps as well...
