Welcome to this forum and to being a Savannah parent as well. The people on here are wonderful and if you have any questions about the breed, this is the best source for CORRECT information about Savannahs.

I have a question, I am picking him up in Orlando and it's a 7 hour drive to home. Do I need like a cage for him, or what's the best way to transport a kitten over that time? My gf will be with me and I figured he could sit on her lap the ride down.

Take a cat carrier with you. I think it's safer for the cat to be confined. If you are in an accident, heaven forbid, but they do happen, that tiny little body will not be loosely flying all over the place. That said, there are few folks on here who started out with the kitten in the carrier and then ended up holding it on the lap. Depends a lot on how the kitten takes to the car ride.

I totally agree with Deborah as the kitten needs his safe place. If it turns out that he does better outside the carrier, then so be it. I'd also park you or your girlfriend in the back seat along with the kitten and carrier as they can be awful distracting on that ride home and since you'll have a long time to spend with them not much your going to miss those first few hours.

When we took Sofia home we had a 4.5 hour car ride. We had a carrier for her, but when we closed it she would whine and meow like crazy. We left it open and she just layed with her body just outside the open carrier.

She eventually made her way onto my lap and slept there for the last 2 hours. We had a solid hour of playtime at the breeder's place before we took her home, and with all of that travel, i think she was tired (lucky us).
I agree with everybody else and think it's the smartest to get a carrier. It's always better to be prepared with one, instead of wishing you had one!

My brother was transporting his Maine Coon, Callie, from where he was moving from to his new house. He did not have a carrier and the cat got lose in the car and got stuck underneath where he was driving so please get a carrier. I too agree with everyone else that you will wish you had one.
