Horner's syndrome & deafness after ear flush

...I am a bit bothered that she was put on steroids when she has an active infection. Did the vet say why he prescribed this?
Got me scratching my head as there is dexamethasone in the drops. Perhaps the vet thinks there might be inflammation somewhere else.

I have heard that they can have a reaction to the ear flush used which can cause deafness unless they just used pure saline, anything can be problematic.

Our girl had some awful ear issues when she was young and couldn't hear a peep until after we had her for almost a year. Being an all white cat there is a higher probability of deafness and we had pretty much resigned ourselves to her being deaf. I don't exactly remember when she first started responding to sounds, but certainly more than 6 months after her ear problems were addressed at the vet. Now she is just selectively deaf, and certainly no different than any other cat getting up there in years.

Anyway, just wanted you to know that there is hope and my thoughts are with you and Xumi.

We had a kitten develop a yeast infection after having an ear flush. I'm not a fan at all. Would much rather dip a Q-tip or even a wadded up bid of paper towel in ear cleaner or saline and clean them as far as I can see in to the ear. Selkirks also have a lot of ear wax... runs in the breed. It is a pain but I don't use flushes any more.

I had a cat with similar symptoms and it turned out he had an inner ear tumor that was benign but nevertheless growing into the brain - had to have surgery to remove it.

The vet did not explain other than to say this was the best way to treat it.

I usually use a 1:1 mix of alcohol and glycerol when cleaning out ears (provided there is no tympanic rupture!), works very well. If somebody has been poking things in the canal (Q-tips and the like) you are more likely to see a rupture. But I cannot understand how a simple ear cleaning could give those symptoms unless something has been ruptured, I`d definitely want to search for underlying causes, possibly of both. There is no middle ear infection?

Must have been lucky. Neither of my Curlies had wax issues.

Really? I see it all the time in pics of kittens for sale. I have a few here that need to be managed to keep the build up down. Visually appears to be a horrid case of earmites, but it's just wax and dirt. Either way, need to stay on top of it. :)
