So I'm not sure if maybe I'm misreading, misunderstanding, or what? Maybe you guys can help me...When I read this:

"Kittens will be ready to leave around ten weeks old. They will have been wormed and had at least one vaccination. All kittens are under evaluation for quality and pricing is subject to change until a deposit has been received or until they are sold. RollinRidge Savannahs offers Hand Delivery or Shipping, both Domestic and Internationally for an extra charge which is not included in the price of the kitten. These additional costs would include airfare, crate, vet health certificate and any necessary permits."

I read this to mean that the travel certificate would be included in the shipping fee, not that it was extra for a health certificate. Of course it's always better to ask what's included and what's not, but that's how I read it.

Yes, the travel health certificate would be included in any shipping fee charged... but when the kitten is not being shipped then if you wanted the health certificate it would be extra. In this case, the offer was to have another person deliver the kitten to a meeting point... and so if the buyer wanted the health certificate (and that likely is a good option) then it would seem reasonable that they would have to pay for it.

Hm, when I got Duma I didn't get a travel health certificate. I did get his vaccination records, though. But no certificate. Same with Dante. When I traveled with Dante I had to pay extra for a travel health certificate (the certificate was a separate cost from a regular exam, which was also required, so the whole thing was quite expensive, relatively speaking). It just seems to me that it makes sense that if someone wanted a travel health certificate when the cat isn't traveling that it would cost extra. Desi was shipped to me, and the travel health certificate was included in the extra travel fee (as above).

Do you give a free travel health certificate for every pet you sell but don't ship? The expectation for that just doesn't make sense to me.

What do breeders give to pet parents upon adoption when there is no shipping involved?

Stormi, I can attest to the quality of Patti's Savannahs, as I have 2. And Patti's integrety is beyond reproach. I have had NO health issues with either of mine. ( Aside from ear mites...common here in AZ.)

I don't know of any states, although there could be some, that don't require a health certificate if you're passing through with an animal in your car. Most people I've known aren't aware of the requirement or choose to ignore it. From AVMA:
  • If you are taking your pet across state or international borders, a health certificate is required. The health certificate must be signed by a veterinarian after your pet has been examined and found to be free of disease. Your pet's vaccinations must be up to date in order for the health certificate to be completed.

Crap, forgot my other point, if the cost of the health certificate to ship a kitten is included in the total price of the kitten, then the certificate to drive it across state lines should be also.

Yah...I always give a health certificate as I want my kittens to be seen by a vet prior to going to their new home...

The other thing you want to ask about, which Deborah alluded to, is their contract. A contract puts your terms into writing, it includes price, shipping/transportation arrangements, health guarantees, and what is required if you can no longer keep the kitten, amongst other things. I would not buy a cat (or dog or anything else) without a contract, and you should ask to see it before you ever send a deposit.

In addition, have they asked anything about you? I have quite a detailed pre-adoption questionnaire that I ask my potential buyers to fill out, because I want to make sure my kittens are going to the best homes possible.

Stormi, if you decide to look elsewhere, I have some F2 and F6 kittens available. I haven't advertised them yet, but if you're interested email me at patti@jasirisana.com and I will send you some pics.

No contracts were mentioned and they asked no questions at all- which was another thing I felt odd about. I think I will give you an email~ ^^

And they say she is 10 weeks old and ready to leave. Again, that sounded odd to me.

There are a lot of different practices amongst breeders, I can only tell you what has worked best for me. But I know what kittens are like at 10 weeks vs. 12 weeks so that just bothers me. Or maybe my kittens are just slow developers...

I'll be honest, I have actually never had anyone ask for a health certificate when getting a kitten from me locally, and it has never occurred to me to get one. I do require that the new owners have the kitten seen by a vet within 72 hours unless there's extenuating circumstances, so to have the kitten visit the vet twice in two weeks seems a bit over the top... especially when considering what they can potentially be exposed to every time they visit the vet's office.

And remember, with Kilifi's propensity for build up of debris in her ears she will always be prone to getting ear mites.
