I really want to do this right, but he has way different ideas. I just got home from my friends and playing music and when I went in, Boom .. he was in the hall. Kilifi sood as a guard and stopped him for me. I know it is supposed to be 2 weeks, but what do ya do when it becomes impossible?

I know that we had to adopt a rather strange way of walking when we would enter/exit Rafiki's quarantine room.

To enter, place left hand on door knob, slowly turn knob while squating and reaching down with right hand to catch rapidly exiting kitten.

To leave the room, throw ball away from door to get Rafiki away, turn knob with right hand while crouching down and sweeping side to side with left hand to catch Jammu who was also trying to dart in.

Be glad that at least Kiki isnt trying to dart in as well!

Cary…you know the boy wants out so you can either break quarantine and your contract with Patti (at least she lives close enough to come and give you 50 lashes) or you can figure out how to enter a room knowing there's a crafty SV on the other side who wants out.

Open the door a little bit and grab him as he tries to bolt, put him in a crate in his room and bring in his food or whatever, close the door and let him out of the crate. Or keep a small crate outside his room and make sure he runs into it as you open the door.

Rafiki's suggestion of using a toy to keep him away from the door when you leave the room is excellent. It usually works.

We had this problem with Mickey. We addressed it by always having something he wanted "more" than out, and by locking up Jarvis and D. Easy? No. But it worked and Mickey is very bonded to us, so I would say it was worth it.

Talking to Patti. For the most part the quarantine has been broken by his repeated darts. So since my bonding to him was so quick and strong, it was decided to see how they fair.
NO fighting and already they are chasing and playing hide and seek. I know there are some who will not agree, But I am feeling very good about this. They are BOTH happy. Kiki has not had this much fun in a long time. She is smiling. Regie is not crying for attention. And he keeps coming to me for skritches. :)

Congratulations on your kitten into. I'd suggest a drink of your favorite adult beverage, if you enjoy such. It been a joy to me, reading about your Savannah adventures.

There are several reasons to quarantine a new kitten/cat when first bringing it home. The two week quarantine period is set because this is typically the time it might take for illness to set in if the stress of the move triggers an infection. Since all of Cary's felines come from the same cattery it is highly unlikely that Regie will introduce a new bug that the other two haven't been exposed to yet.

The second reason to quarantine is to develop that bond between man and kitten - that will be up to Cary to judge but from what he has said, the bond has already been created.

The third reason is to allow the kitten to get used to it's new environment, starting with a small room and gradually expanding its territory as it grows accustomed to its new digs. Since Regie has already visited Cary's home several times he is already familiar the layout there, although he has spent most of his time in one room.

The final reason for quarantine is to allow the current four-legged residents get used to having a new sibling move in. This is the most fluid reason for quarantine, meaning that the other pets might accept a new family member right away, or it could take months to fully integrate the family into a cohesive, integrated group. It sounds like Kiki and Regie have already adjusted to each other. Azidi may be a different story but that will be another challenge for Cary to work through.

All in all, even though Cary hasn't stuck to the 'letter of the law' he has followed the spirit of the purpose behind the quarantine and I am sure that all will work out in the end. Cary has good intuition when it comes to knowing what's best for his cats, and I trust his judgment in this situation.

So far so good. I put him back in his room overnight and this AM he is being a typical boy. ( chasing Kiki and getting into everything. ) Whenever he finds himself in a bind he calls daddy. If Kiki gets the better of him he comes to daddy for protection and sympathy. And I was in with Zidi while Kiki and Regie were chasing thru the house and she was at the door intently watching. Maybe her intro should start soon.

As I was typing the above He managed to get on top of the fridge. Not sure how, but Kiki has not done that and she was very concerned. boys...!
