Is a Cat Tree / "Lookout Post" a Necessity?

I'll keep a look out as he ages.

It's 15' up ("second floor"). The vet said he's smart enough that he wouldn't jump from a height that would hurt him. He doesn't seem tempted. He just chills in the sun.

We live on the second level too and Sasha has climbed up the railings, over the flower window boxes and was almost preparing and planning a jump. You never know what might catch their eye - a bird, butterfly, grasshopper !!!
Sasha is still allowed on the patio but we watch him like a hawk - ready to scruff him and bring him down if he jumps up. And he's smart and knows that too !!!

I know sometimes we sound like doom and gloom because we are always telling people to watch out for this and watch out for that, but that is because we have all experienced savannah cat antics...I know someone who had her F2 on the balcony, two stories up and did not think the cat would jump off the balcony - wrong - the cat jumped off and is still missing...my own F6 boy, Taj, knocked out my bedroom window screen and jumped 20 feet...

They may seem fine unleashed on a balcony or patio until one day, something catches their eye and they are gone in a flash...I would just hate to hear it happen to anyone :-(
