Is a (F6) Savannah right for me?

Hi all,

My name is AJ and I have been researching SVs for quite some time, and would like to hopefully get my own. A little about me: I am a college with one roommate right now, in a two story house, but will be living alone next year in a one bedroom apartment. After college I will either stay in my current city or move back to my hometown. My parents have two shih tzu dogs at their house, and they're pretty laid back. I believe an SV would get along nicely with them.

I've chosen an F6 because they seem to have a calmer disposition and are smaller than previous generations. I was originally looking to get a dog but think that it would be too demanding, and with a cat I will have less to worry about.

I think if you are wanting a less intense kitty then a later generation Savannah is a better choice, but honestly I don't see a lot of difference in that respect F4 or further... and of course there are laidback F2s and F3s to even disprove that rule. But I don't think in the years I have been breeding that there is a significant personality difference F4 to F6 so would not necessarily limit yourself that way.

Thanks for the response Brigitte! I'll keep that in mind. I've found a beautiful F6 boy that I'm ready to pull the trigger on, but if I don't I will be sure to broaden my search.

If you have already seen the kitten that tugs at your heart strings...then that is all that is important

It sounds like you have found the right boy for you, but be sure to talk with the breeder about his personality. I have had some later generation Savannahs exhibit almost as much energy as the early generations, so a blanket statement that F6s have a calmer personality is not necessarily true. Be sure you know what you are getting before you bring the little guy home.

I sold 2 F7 to a breeder who told me those two had more energy and got into more trouble than her F2s. As for size the F7 boy ended up 18lb. there are exceptions to Rules. Izzy is very high energy and her son I held back always wants to be carried around and snuggled. There is definitely personality differences in each cat. No matter what it is an excellent breed and am sure you will be happy.

Thanks all. The cat is described as having "the best, most loving personality," which sounds good to me. He looks pretty relaxed in all of the pictures I've seen of him and I absolutely love his markings. He's from aaasavannahs, which there seemed to be some controversy about but was resolved.

This made me spit my coffee out my nose I have a spitfire F6 male that is devil spawn. He is sweet as sugar, loving, gives lots of head butts and is a total lap cat. But, he is the trouble maker in the family. He is 10 lbs and the boss of the pride, putting my 2 F2s, who are 16 and 22 lbs, in their place multiple times per day. If there is a crash, boom, or bang in the house, Taji is the source.

Not saying you won't find a laid-back cat, but a breeder can't guarantee what type of personality the cat will ultimately have. A laid back kitten might be more rambunctious at maturity and vice versa. I have yet to see a breeder website that didn't describe their kittens as having the "best and loving personalities." Not trying to discourage you, just want to be sure that in your enthusiasm to acquire a SV, you understand you may have expectations that may not be fulfilled.

Whether laid back or a ball of fire, your SV will have tons of personality and bring joy and laughter to your life.

Hi AJ, we have an F6 male and female, litter mates. They are awesome! They do have tons of energy and intelligence. Indicative of the breed. If you are ready for that, then I think F6s are great. Just make sure you understand that even with an F6, a lot will be required of your time and attention.
