Is Growling Dominance?

Nimbus growls at Chuju and Mohkie if they come near when Nimbus is on the couch, or anytime he doesn't want to be bothered. I have to be careful, becuse it can escalate into a full blown battle if I don't stop it right away.

Keeba is the only one that doesn't growl or hiss! I've only heard him hiss maybe 2 times, he got startled!

I have a F3 male who loves to play fetch. When returning his "moppie", he occasionally growls, which is his signal to play tug of war.
At first I was quite alarmed at this behavior and I thought it was aggressive behavior. I contacted the breeder, who replied this is a common behavior and it is not aggressive and actually his way of saying "look at what I got". I always could pet him and praise him during the growling.
Now when an unfamiliar animal or cat is out the back door at night, he and his full brother will growl, fatten their tails, and generally carry on like any other cat defending their home.
Unless the cat takes a swing at you, I wouldn't worry about it.

Love everyone's stories!

Vienna's an F2. She is not very vocal at all, which I guess is rather rare for a Savannah. I do wish she talked more, but she still talks LOUDLY and PLENTY when she doesn't like how something is ("Don't leave me alone!!" "Let me out of my crate!" etc.). She growls, too, when she has a toy or when another cat tries to eat her food, but so far, it's harmless. She's not aggressive at all. Just SUPER playful, and a bit rough when she plays.

and a bit rough when she plays.
All three of my SV's (F5 and F3 brothers) play rough! On occasion it gets a bit out of hand. Several broken picture frames come to mind. These cats don't seem to mind at all crashing into things at speed. And yes, there is growling as a precursor when it starts to get bad. But no blood is drawn.
Come to think of it, When one of the brothers bolted out the door and nailed a chipmunk and brought it right back into the house, he growled a lot when my wife tried to remove the chipmunk. Took two minutes to remove the dead chipmunk, but he didn't hurt my wife.

Zuri growls when eating whole prey if any of the other cats gets near her...many cats are protective of their food ;)
